Rumble on the Red Cedar

Brad Erickson
Menomonie, Wisconsin, on July 17, 2022, the World of Outlaw Late Models invaded the Red Cedar Speedway for the Rumble on the Red Cedar sponsored by White City Glass. Local late model drivers entered the fray and competed against the professional national touring drivers. The support classes included unsanctioned open modifieds and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Winners on the evening were Winfield, Tennessee’s Mike Marlar, Jake Hartung, and Nick Koehler. It was Marlar’s tenth career feature win in the World of Outlaw Late Models tour.

The Outlaws race information and official article is available on https://worldofoutlaws.com/latemodels. The heat races were lined up after time trials with Tanner English (Benton, Kentucky), Mike Marlar (Winfield, Tennessee), and series points leader Dennis Erb (Carpentersville, Illinois) each winning their heat. Jake Timm (Winona, Minnesota), Boom Briggs (Bear Lake, Pennsylvania), Spencer Diercks (Davenport, Iowa), and Lance Matthees (Winona, Minnesota), raced their way into the main event through the Last Chance Qualifier. Josh Richards (Shinnston, West Virginia) used a series provisional to start the feature in 23rd position.

The 40-lap main event saw the pole sitter take the lead from Ricky Weiss (Headingly, Manitoba, Canada), on lap five and lead the remainder of the event to the checkered flag. He was hounded by 11th starting Ryan Gustin (Marshalltown, Iowa) for several laps for the point until Gustin’s night ended with a mechanical breakdown with five laps remaining. Ricky Weiss finished second with Dennis Erb filling out the podium in third. Shane Clanton (Locust Grove, Georgia) raced from the 13th position and Jimmy Mars (Menomonie, Wisconsin) from 16th to round out the top five. The remainder of the top ten included Max Blair (Titusville, Pennsylvania), Tanner English, Chad Mahder (Bloomer, Wisconsin), Billy Moyer Sr. (Batesville, Arkansas), and Brent Larson (Lake Elmo, Minnesota).

The unsanctioned open modified feature saw its complexion changed in the first set of turns in the 20-lap event. Several cars were involved in a melee in turn two of lap one as the front runners all ended up turned around and most hard into the wall, ending pole sitter’s AJ Diemel’s evening. The restart saw Jake Hartung move to the lead as Calvin Iverson set chase in second, and by lap four, seventh starting Matt Leer had raced into third. On lap five, Iverson powered below the leader for the point, but Hartung moved up high on the speedway, pulled even with the leader on lap seven, and took the lead back one circuit later.

A lap 12 caution for a spin and the restart lined up with Hartung out front and Iverson, Leer, the 13th stating Adam Hensel, and Ashley Anderson running in the top five. Hartung resumed the lead and with six laps remaining, Iverson got under him in turn two, contact was made, and Iverson got collected by the tires lining the inside of the speedway turning him sideways. He was able to save the car, nearly getting it straightened out going down the backstretch, and was able to miss the infield guardrail nearing the scales. He had lost a bumper in the action, the caution flag flew, and he appeared to end his night due to safety.

Hartung was the leader on the restart, and he drove home for the win as Hensel and Ashley Anderson put on a side-by-side fight for runner up, which was taken by Hensel. Ninth starting Shane Halopka and 11th starting Mike Anderson rounded out the top five. Hartung, Halopka, and Ashley Anderson won their individual heats.

The Tim’s Automotive Machine WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds ran two heats with Travis Anderson and Tommy Richards each carrying the checkered flag. It took two attempts to get the field under green at feature time as Richards led lap one, but fourth starting Nick Koehler took the lead on lap two and never looked back as he pulled away from the field. A caution with six laps remaining gave everyone chasing Koehler a fighting chance, but it was short lived, as he once again put distance on the field and drove to the victory. Brady Larson raced from sixth to second as Richards finished in third. Pole sitter Mike Widmann finished fourth and Cody Borgeson was scored in fifth at the line.

The Red Cedar Speedway returns to action on Friday, July 22, 2022, with five classes, (no Late Models) and Powder Puff by Mars Racecars and Keyes Chevytown. The WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, and the RCS Hornets will all be in attendance.
