Sabraski Wins Dave Shackleton Memorial

Brad Erickson

Menomonie, Wisconsin, on July 28, 2022, was night one of the Dunn County Fair races with the Dave Shackleton Memorial, Fast Lane Super Stock Series which paid $2500 to the winner. Included in the racing card were the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, RCS Hornets and USRA Late Models (Limited Lates). Winners on the evening included Shane Sabraski, Kennedy Swan, Jeremy Johnson, and Lance Hofer.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks were on display at the Red Cedar Speedway as a record tying 52 cars signed in to compete in the Dave Shackleton Memorial, Fast Lane Super Stock Series. There were five heats, two B-Features, and a 26 car, 30 lap finale, for $2500 to the winner. You didn’t have to look far for a sampler of the quality of racecars in the pits as the winners list provided Andrew Mackey, Ron Mahder, Jesse Redetzke, Shane Sabraski, and Tommy Richards each winning their respective heats and Eric Olson and Shawn McFadden topped the B-Features.

The feature saw Mackey race to the point as Sabraski and fifth starting Richards fell into line. It was Sabraski taking over the lead on lap two as Richards grabbed second from Mackey a circuit later. Redetzke could be seen making ground from his fourth starting position in the highline and he moved into second on lap nine. At the halfway point, Sabraski was comfortably out front as Redetzke tried to track him down. Richards was hanging tight in third below Redetzke and Mackey and Terran Spacek were fighting for the fourth position.

With 18 laps scored, a caution in turn three slowed the pace and took away any advantage that Sabraski had built. On the restart Redetzke showed the leader the faster line as he used the ultrahigh groove to sweep into the lead. He continued to lead until he slapped the turn two wall hard and Sabraski pounced, pulling even on the backstretch. Redetzke was fearless though as he continued to run the cushion a mere few inches from the wall, and he was able to retake the point.

A yellow flag with seven laps remaining slowed the intense battle and it was noticed that behind the top two, 14th starting Jake Froemke had established himself in third and Spacek was running in fourth over Richards. On the restart, Redetzke jumped the cushion in turn two and it was just enough bobble for Sabraski to slip into the lead. The final laps saw Redetzke all over the rear of Sabraski as the leader had overtaken Redetzke’s line. Richards used the low line to race up to catch them and challenge down low. The spectacular race ended as Sabraski flashed under the checkered flag for an amazing 795th feature win of his career. Redetzke and Richards were hot on his heels finishing second and third. Froemke was in fourth as Dylan Nelson drove from 11th to finish fifth.

Nick Koehler and Kennedy Swan won their heats in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, but it was Jesse Bryan very strong from the feature pole to lead early and often. He forged the way but a caution at the halfway point put the pack tightly together and Swan was seen to have driven from seventh on the field to be lurking in third, right behind Koehler. On the restart, Swan moved into second and set her sights on the leader as the two separated from the crowd.

With three laps remaining, they had closed hard on a lap car and between turns one and two, Bryan attempted to pass just above the lapper when the later pushed up the track slightly. Swan didn’t hesitate at all as she moved from low on the speedway to even lower and squeezed by both into the lead. Over the remaining laps, she showed just how fast she was as she drove away from the very strong Bryan to the checkered flag. Koehler, Shadow Kitchner, and Cody Borgeson filled out the top five.

The RCS Hornets were led from the beginning by Jeremy Johnson as he was in the seat of the 9jr. He was caught by Brandon Gleiter and the two drove side by side for first for the entirety of laps three through eight with Johnson having a slight advantage at the line, leading by a nose for the first four of those six laps. It was Gleiter holding the advantage for two laps before he took the point in full. Gleiter led the remainder but failed tech inspection, so he, along with fourth finishing Jason Holte who also failed tech, were disqualified.

Johnson was the winner on the evening as Preston Coombs was scored in second. Alexander Lassard finished in third over Alyssa Nelson and Justin King in fifth. The heats were won by the eventually disqualified Holte and Gleiter.

Tim Borgeson, Jesse Glenz, and Brett Shafer were heat winners in the USRA Late Models. The feature saw Lance Hofer lead from the drop of the green, racing from the pole to the checkered flag 20 laps later. He survived two cautions but raced back to a sizable lead after each, Matt LaDuke ran strong in second as Glenz raced from ninth on the grid to third. Dylan Kromschroeder and Shafer rounded out the top five.

The Red Cedar Speedway raced again on the following night on the Dunn County Fair night two. They are off next week and return to action on Friday, August 12, 2022, for the Late Model Challenge Series Mahder #55 Race sponsored by Midwest Food and Tobacco and DKS Construction. The WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, and Super Stocks will be in action.
