It was Swan Time at the Red Cedar Speedway

Brad Erickson

On Friday, May 07, 2021, the Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin, featured Ladies Night Out at the Track presented by Lewis Bjork Septic with WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, and RCS Hornets.  Covid restrictions were partially lifted, and the event was held at 25% capacity to meet Dunn County’s guidelines.  It was lady’s night indeed as 14-year-old Kennedy Swan fought to the lead and drove away from the guys to her second career feature win in the Midwest Modifieds.  It was her first win in Menomonie on only her second visit.  Other winners on the evening saw Jesse Glenz, Ashley Anderson, Dave Flynn, Andrew Hanson, and Jeremy Johnson in victory lane.

The WISSOTA Late Models saw Darrel Nelson and James Giossi win their respective heats, but it was all Jesse Glenz at feature time.  Jake Redetzke took the early lead from the outside of the front row as Glenz moved from fifth starting position to race Sam Mars door to door for second.  Glenz moved by Mars and coming through turns three and four working lap three, Glenz applied a slider on the leader and moved out front.  One yellow flag flew to slow the action, but back under green it was Glenz checking out on the field for the win.

Behind the leader there was plenty of racing action as Mars, Nelson, and Giossi swapped positions several times.  It was Mars, who had faded to fourth who stayed steady on the high side and drove to the runner up position.  Nelson and Giossi followed him home as Redetzke made a late race move back into the top five over Kaanta.

In the WISSOTA Modifieds it was Kevin Adams, back in a modified after a one-year stint in a late model, and Shane Halopka

winning their heats, both running MB Customs racecars.  The feature saw Halopka jump to the lead from the pole and look impressive up against the wall as he blistered the Red Cedar Speedway.  Behind him, by lap three, the seemingly unbeatable Ashley Anderson had made impressive moves to drive from seventh on the starting grid into third as Mike Anderson battled Cory Williams in the top five.

The Andersons each moved up and were running second and third to Halopka as the later was stretching his lead on the field.  Behind them, Shane Sabraski dueled with Adams for fifth. In open racetrack, Ashley Anderson closed on the leader, and ate away his entire cushion he had amassed.  Mike Anderson too was closing the gap on the top runners.  Ashley showed himself down low to the leader a couple of times, but Halopka took the white flag in first.  Coming off turn two, Halopka jumped the cushion and Ashley Anderson stuck.  It was Ashley to the lead down the backstretch as Mike was hounding Halopka for second.  Halopka got high again coming off turn four and Mike took advantage to overtake him for second as they streaked under the checkered flag.  It was Ashley Anderson winning his third consecutive feature and second in two attempts in Menomonie.  Mike Anderson finished second for the second week at the track and Halopka settled for third.  Adams and Sabraski rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks ran two heats with Tom Karis winning the first and Nick Oreskovich the second.  At feature time it took last week’s feature winner, Jesse Redetzke no time to move to the lead from the outside of the front row.  Dave Flynn quickly moved from sixth to second and Shane Sabraski ran third.  There were two yellows in the event which kept Redetzke in the same area code with the other cars on the track.  After each, he moved back out to a substantial lead running the upper groove.  However, it isn’t over until its over, and that was proven in this event.  Redetzke developed late mechanical issues with his steering and Flynn was like a shark in the water.  He could see Redetzke begin to struggle, and he closed an entire straightaway and flashed below him late.  Flynn drove to the improbable and impressive win as Redetzke limped home in second.  Sabraski, Kevin Burdick, and Dexton Koch rounded out the top five runners.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were 21 strong and ran three heats with Tommy Richards, Kennedy Swan, and Jay Richardson each taking a win.  Swan ended her night with a clean sweep in impressive fashion.  It was pole sitter Nick Ayotte to the early lead as fourth starting Swan moved into second on lap two. Jay Richardson moved in and battled with Swan door to door as second starting Kyle Kirberger drove himself back into the fray and he himself overtook second. A spin on the backstretch reset the field, and on the restart, Swan used the highline to move from outside of row two to the lead. Kirberger wasn’t done though, and he battled back to move door to door with the leader.  He overtook the point and a second and final yellow slowed the pace once again at the halfway point.

Kirberger led them back to green, but Swan dove underneath him in turns one and two and edged her SSR racecar into the lead on the backstretch.  Coming off of turn four, she had already moved to a few car length advantage and it was clear to see she was going to be tough to catch.  Seventeenth starting Brandon Jensen had sliced his way into the top four as he went three wide Richardson and Kirberger for the second position.  It was Jensen sweeping into the runner up position, but Swan had checked out and was not going to be caught as she drove under the checkered flag in an impressive fashion, bringing the crowd to their feet as it was a popular win.  Jensen’s extremely strong run ended in second as Richardson drove from eighth to third.  Cody Carlson got by Kirberger late as they rounded out the top five.

Two WISSOTA Street Stock heats were topped by Parker Anderson and Kyle Genett, who both came from deep in their fields to win.  At feature time it was Andrew Hanson to the lead on lap one and it was a lead he would never relinquish.  Adam Soltis and Cody Kummer ran in the top three early.  Dustin Doughty was coming off a three-win weekend last week and he moved from sixth through the field into second.  When he cleared into second, he began to close the gap on the leader, but in the end, Hanson was just too tough. Late racing saw Genett, Danny Richards, and Soltis race three-wide for third.  It was Hanson at the line by five car lengths over Doughty as Genett finished third over Soltis and Richards.

Jeremy Johnson swept the RCS Hornets but it was exciting.  In the feature, it was Levi Price from the pole to the lead as he looked strong out front.  Johnson was able to move beside him several times, but Price held strong. There were three yellow flags in the ten-lap event which kept the pack together.  The third of the crashes saw heavier damage to the cars of Roy and Scott Cooper as they crashed hard together in turn two. Just prior to the crash, Price, Johnson and Sean Svee had moved three-wide for the lead.  It was Price restarting at the point for a green, white, checkered run to the win.  Price maintained a narrow advantage at the white flag and he and Johnson raced side by side coming off of turn four to the checkered.  In a literal photo finish, it was Price with the win and Johnson in second by a hair.  However, in the tech area, Price was not able to clear inspection and he was disqualified and relegated to last.  Johnson was awarded the win over Svee, Zane Olson, and Vanessa Seipel, the only remaining cars on the track.

The Red Cedar Speedway is scheduled to return to racing a Friday, May 14, 2021, with racing action presented by presented by AirTec Sports and Markquart Menomonie.  Dunn County will make a decision on the size of the crowd allowed in the grandstand on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, and this information will be posted immediately on multiple social media sites.  Due to the racetrack being leased on the county owned fairgrounds, the decision is not made by the Red Cedar Speedway.  Once again, your continued support is crucial in these trying times.  The Wissota Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, and RCS Hornets will all be in attendance.
