Austin Hartmann tallies top-20 in first IRA 410 main event at Plymouth hometown track

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 6, 2022 – Nearly two weeks after competing in their first-career NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-main event at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wis, Austin Hartmann and the 87A Hartmann Racing team added another “first” by participating in their first Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series main event with a 410 motor under the hood at the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis., during the second Road America Challenge Sprint Car event on Thursday, June 30.

With the NASCAR Cup Series set to visit Road America just at nearby Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, The Plymouth Dirt Track was buzzing for the special weeknight all-Sprint Car spectacular with a full house of fans packing the grandstand and a solid field of 28 IRA Sprint Cars checked in to battle for the $5,000-to-win top prize.

After failing to record a timed lap in his hot lap session, Hartmann opened the night by clocking in 21st in the 28-car field with a lap of 12.457 seconds around his hometown track.

Hartmann then lined up seventh in the third eight-lap IRA heat race and stuck to the low groove around the increasingly dry slick third-mile clay oval track surface to finish seventh, just one spot out of a direct transfer spot to the evening’s 30-lap A main.

After starting third in the 12-lap B main, the former Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car competitor navigated mainly the low to middle sections of the track as IRA veterans Steve Meyer, Scott Biertzer and Kris Spitz worked their way past Hartmann’s 87A machine.

However, Hartmann held strong over the final three laps to secure a sixth-place finish and punch his ticket to the 30-lap IRA Road America Challenge main event.

“The issue in hot laps was alignment,” Hartmann said. “After we got the problem fixed, the car handled good in the heat race. We entered the B main the same as any other race, trying to go forward. However, that just wasn’t the case for us in that race, but we were still able to get an A-main transfer spot.”

After starting 24th in the 24-car IRA A-main lineup, Hartmann ran a smooth and consistent race as he managed to dodge several mishaps, which produced a lengthy event filled with six caution/red flag periods and ensuing restarts.

In the closing stages of the race, Hartmann engaged in a duel with fellow IRA rookie competitor Tyler Tischendorf before finishing 19th in the event, which was won by Bill Balog.

“The A main was long with all of the cautions,” Hartmann said. “I just tried to stay clean and not get involved with spinning cars.”

With no IRA events scheduled, Hartmann and the 87A Hartmann Racing team will take the upcoming weekend off, before picking up with the IRA tour by venturing west for the two-night, co-sanctioned Buffalo Wild Wings King of the Wings event with the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association (NOSA) at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakotaon Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16with the Case Construction World of Outlaws Late Model Series also on the card both nights.

“We will be off this weekend,” Hartmann said. “Our next races will be at River Cities Speedway in North Dakota on July 15 and July 16. I’m super excited to race at River Cities, which is another new track for us.”
