Jim Town Show Down at EVS
Brad Erickson Eagle Valley Speedway, on September 25 and 26, 2020; the Eagle Valley Speedway presented the Jim Town Show Down with two complete shows on Friday and Saturday night. The race format was run in a draw redraw style. On night one, Michael Truscott, Curt Myers, Travis Anderson, Parker Anderson, Mike Schnider, and Jake Halterman each won features. The second night saw Mike Anderson, Curt Myers, George Dalbeck, Parker Anderson, Mike Schnider, and Jake Halterman in victory lane.On Friday night, the WISSOTA Modified heats were won by Grant Southworth, Mike Knopps, and Mike Anderson but it was Michael Truscott scoring the feature win. At the drop of the green flag, Matt Leer moved to the lead from the outside of the front row as Truscott settled into second. Leer attacked the highline as Truscott slowly closed the gap. He was able to catch Leer on lap eight as the two raced at a frantic pace until lap 12, when he was able to overtake the point. The race continued at a scorching pace as the laps ticked off. Anderson overtook fourth on lap 19 and Jake Smith passed Leer for second with three to go. Truscott blasted his way to the win and Leer recovered to retake second from Smith on the final circuit. Anderson drove home in fourth over Paul Harlestad, who rounded out the top five. The WISSOTA Super Stock heats were topped by Tommy Richards and Curt Myers as Myers went on to sweep the night at feature time. It was Dave Flynn from the second row in the main event as behind him, eighth starting Myers battled beside Richards for the runner up position. A caution slowed the pace and the first restart attempt was unsuccessful. The second try saw Myers pass Flynn and begin to drive away.Jeff Brauer was on the move as he drove from seventh and passed into fourth on lap ten. Eight laps later, he overtook third as Myers was well out front as he lapped all the way up past eighth place. It was Myers by over a straightaway as Flynn raced home to second. Jeff Brauer finished third over Nick Oreskovich and Tommy Richards rounded out the top five. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had four heats with Josh Smith, Ross Fuhrman, Dylan Goettl, and Jimmy Latvala claiming the victories. Later in the evening, George Dalbeck was able to top the B-Feature as Michael Truscott, Dalton Mains, and Craig Haas each qualified for the A-main though the same. The caution flag flew often during the feature and Travis Anderson used it to his advantage to help him secure the win.It was two-wide with front row starters, Anderson and Latvala for the first two laps with Anderson holding the slightest advantage at the line each circuit. While working lap three, the yellow flag flew, and Anderson was dubbed the leader for the restart. Cody Carlson moved in and raced door to door with Anderson for the lead under green, but the yellow flew again before the lap was completed. On the restart, Anderson again held the point but by lap six, seventh starting Dylan Goettl had overtaken second. A caution closed him to the bumper of the leader and at speed thereafter, he moved door to door for the point. On lap nine, Goettl moved into first but one lap later, he relinquished the same when he lost his driveshaft. Anderson was back up front as Carlson and Josh Smith chased.Anderson raced very high on the speedway as Carlson raced low and Shadow Kitchner entered the picture after having started ninth on the field. Carlson attacked for the lead on lap 17 and he took the point, but a caution flag flew, slowing the pace and placing Anderson back out front because a lap had not been scored with Carlson in the lead. Under green, Anderson led the way as Kitchner raced side by side with Carlson. On lap 22 Kitchner took the position and set his sights on Anderson. On the final circuit of the race, he moved under the leader and edged to the front through turns three and four. However, Anderson’s momentum on the high side carried him back up beside Kitchner as they drag raced to the line. Anderson slipped back past Kitchner for a close and exciting victory as Kitchner was denied his first ever feature win outside of carts. Cody Carlson, Josh Smith, and Derek Haas all finished in the top five.It was Andrew Hanson and Jim Randall winning the WISSOTA Street Stock heats but at feature time, it was all Parker Anderson as he started on the pole and led the entire way to the checkered flag and win. The race went caution free for the first seven laps, but a spinning car caused a break in action. There were caution flags on two straight attempts to get back under green, but all was clean on the third try. On lap 11, Andrew Hanson began to close on the leader, but another caution slowed the pace as they worked lap 13. Back at speed, Anderson held the point as Jim Randall joined Hanson in a side by side battle behind him. Hanson took sole possession and moved his nose under the leader through turn four coming to one to go. Anderson held course and Randall moved up high to try to steal the show. Anderson was the leader at the line for the win as Randall was able to overtake Hanson for second. The top three runners finished in very tight formation. Jay Kesan and Adam Soltis both scored top five finishes behind them.Mike Schnider and Travis Hazelton won their WISSOTA Pure Stock heats and Schnider went on to sweep the evening after racing from fifth to the win in the feature. George Richards led early and on lap two, cars became bunched up on the straightway and Bob Thompson was victim to a roll over. The red flag flew and after his car was righted and removed, they restarted. Under green, Schnider moved in on the leader and the two raced side by side for the point. On lap seven Schnider took the lead for good over Richards and Ryan Olson ran in third. The top three moved away from the others but on lap 16, Richards and Pat Smith both broke down and retired from the event. Both cars were running in the top five at the time. Schnider went on to win with Olson in tow. Travis Hazelton was scored in third over Brent Mindock and tenth starting Bryar Zimmerman in fifth.Jason Junker and Jake Halterman topped the EVS Hornet heats, and Jake Halterman made short work of the feature from the pole. Junker, Jason Helgeson, and Chad Halterman rounded out the top five.On Saturday night, the second evening of racing action, the races were delayed early due to rain, but the speedway was packed back in and was blistering fast and smooth. The WISSOTA Modifieds had two heats which were won by Nick Koehler and Mike Anderson. Later in the night, the feature proved to be a classic as it ran with two drivers up front putting on an amazing show. Michael Truscott took the lead from the pole at the drop of the green as Curt Myers settled into second. Mike Anderson found his way to third and then overtook the runner up position.About five laps in, Anderson drove from the high side of turn three and four and was able to get a nose under the leader in turn one. Truscott was very stout though as he maintained the point. Anderson tried again the next lap but again was not successful. Truscott continued his torrid pace as Anderson adjusted his line to come off turn four and maintain in the upper groove. He nearly got beside the leader the following lap, but it took one more circuit for him to get even with Truscott at the flag stand. He was able to attack the turn one cushion and he secured the point coming out of turn two and flying down the backstretch. It was not over yet though as the two modified masters drove the ultra-high side with Anderson out front and Truscott in his shadow. They moved into lapped traffic and both were perfect as they stayed glued together other than when Truscott would try to shoot low coming into the corners on occasion with the hope of slipping past the leader. With two laps to go, Anderson established a slight advantage in turn four and put a few car lengths between he and second. Anderson drove to the win with Truscott in tow in an outstanding show.Behind the leaders there was also a terrific race occurring as Curt Myers drove to the line in third position. He looked extremely competitive in his modified, giving a glimpse of what he is capable of when he begins to focus on a single program in 2021. Jason Richardson and Nick Koehler both had fine runs which ended in top five finishes. The WISSOTA Super Stock heats were won by Tommy Richards and Curt Myers as the A-main was marred with cautions and featured aggressive driving and bent tin. It was Richards to the lead early as sixth starting Nick Oreskovich quickly moved in and battled with Dave Flynn for second. Soon, Curt Myers could be seen moving into the top five. Oreskovich used the high side to overtake second and Myers found his way past Flynn for third.A spin slowed the pace and the restart had a caution of its own. Under green, Oreskovich moved beside the leader and edged his way into first. The caution flag flew again before the lap was scored and Richards regained the point. The restart saw a fine battle between Richards and Oreskovich but a multi-car crash on the backstretch slowed the pace. They crashed again in turns one and two on the restart and it took another attempt to get up to speed. This time, Myers drove low and pulled a slider on Richards, but Richards crossed over and drove even down the backstretch. They drove door to door to the line with Myers with a slight advantage, but a two-car spin in turn four again slowed the pace and gave the lead back to Richards for the restart. The restart again saw aggressive movement up front with a tight race down the backstretch. Richards maintained the lead with Myers in second and Oreskovich in third. The front two began to pull away but there was another caution flag with a turn four spin. On the restart, Myers again used the slider to pass Richards but, he in turn crossed over and pulled back under Myers. As two cars raced for one mark on the raceway, Myers drove into turn three very deep and dropped down across Richards’ nose and there was solid contact. Myers now held the point and Richards had to gather up his racecar, dropping him to fourth in the running order. He quickly recovered to third and shortly thereafter, there was yet another unrelated caution slowing the race. The lineup put Myers up front with Oreskovich up high and Richards below him in the second row. At speed, Myers moved away as the two others fought for position with Oreskovich taking the spot. One final caution flag flew for debris which forced a green, white, checkered run to the flag. It was Myers in control for the final two circuits as he drove to the win with Oreskovich in second and Richards finishing third. D.J. Keeler worked himself into the top five over the last several laps and finished in fourth as Dave Flynn was scored in fifth. The WISSOTA Midwest Modified heats were won by Shane Halopka, Cody Carlson. and Derek Haas. The start of the feature saw Josh Smith move from the pole to the lead as George Dalbeck moved into second and Shane Halopka to third. Dalbeck chased for several laps and closed on Smith, when on lap nine, he moved beside the leader on the inside and was able to make the pass. Three laps later, Smith broke down and pulled into the infield. Dalbeck continued to lead as Halopka chased. He was able to get to the leader’s bumper and searched the raceway up and down for an advantage. It was Dalbeck holding his own and leading to the checkers with Halopka in second. Cody Carlson, Derek Haas, and Ryan Savoy each had fine runs to fill out the top five finishers.A single WISSOTA Street Stock heat saw Adam Soltis carry the checkered flag. At feature time, Cody Cimfl led from the outside of the front row early, but Danny Richards moved beside him on lap two and he was able to grab the lead soon thereafter. It was Parker Anderson driving from the third row to challenge for the lead. The two front runners raced door to door and on lap seven, Anderson drove into first. As the night wore on, Anderson moved away to the win as the race ran caution free. Behind him, Richards maintained in second and although Andrew Hanson closed on Cimfl, he had to settle for fourth. Soltis rounded out the top five. The WISSOTA Pure Stock heats were topped by Ryan Clausen and Mike Schnider as Schnider drew the pole for the feature and drove to a sweep on the weekend with a dominating run. There was one caution flag to slow the pace on lap eleven and a second yellow on the restart attempt. They got back under green and drove the remainder to the checkered flag. It was Schnider well in control with George Richards coming home in second. The top five finishers included Ryan Olson, Bob Thompson, and Ryan Clausen.Jason Junker topped the EVS Hornet heat, but Jake Halterman won the feature easily from the pole. Jason Helgeson, Danny Halterman; Brandon Gleiter, and seventh starting Craig Oas finished in the top five. This marks the end of the 2020 season at the Eagle Valley Speedway.
