Dave Shackleton Super Stock Memorial

Brad Erickson

On Friday, June 04, 2021, the Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, Wisconsin, featured the Dave Shackleton Super Stock Memorial Race presented by Baxter Speed Shop and Thunder Hill Speedway.  In honor of the late Dave Shackleton, a Super Stock Ace, it paid $5,074 to win the Super Stocks, courtesy of Shackleton Tree Service, TMS Auto Center, and Rich Loftus.  After days of rain the previous week, the track and spectators were bathed in sunshine and temperatures in the high 90’s.  The WISSOTA, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, and RCS Hornets were all in attendance.  Winners on the evening saw Ashley Anderson, Jesse Bryan, Danny Richards, and Armond Love standing in Victory Lane and it was Kevin Burdick who took home the huge payday in the Super Stock feature.

The highlight of the night was the Dave Shackleton Super Stock Memorial Race feature as the Super Stock racers commemorated Dave Shackleton’s life and raced hard for over five grand to win.  Throughout the evening, there were donations toward increasing the payout throughout the field and the aggressive racing on the track proved a lot was on the line.

There were four heats which used the passing point system to line up the eventual feature.  Heats were won by Kevin Burdick and Nick Traynor, who each started from the pole; Brandon Duellman from the outside of the front row; and Dexton Koch, who raced from the inside of row three to first, earning him the pole position in the feature.  It was Koch and Duellman from the front row, as Jesse Redetzke started third with Burdick to his outside in row two. Nick Traynor, Rick Hallquist, Danny Thomas, and Nick Oreskovich each earned the remaining positions in the top eight qualifiers.

The race was slowed seven times for caution flags as the racing was intense and aggressive as fans were treated to three and four wide racing throughout the first two thirds of the event.  On the initial start, it was Koch taking the lead but a multi car crash in turn two of the second lap slowed the pace.  The incident involved at least seven cars as they needed to be untangled before the racing could resume.  Under green, again it was Koch out front.  However, Redetzke, who has been dominating racing action at the Red Cedar Speedway, powered underneath the leader on lap three to take the point.  One lap later, Burdick used the low line to overtake second.

A spinning car in turn two brought them under caution and they endured yet another caution upon the restart. They were able to go green, but very soon thereafter, another yellow flag flew for a spin.  They found themselves back at speed and were able to score a few laps before a spinner slowed their pace again.  Back under green, it was Redetzke out front as Burdick lurked in his shadow.  Redetzke was fast, but Burdick appeared to be strong and waiting for an opportunity to steal the point.  They had a very tense moment as they were in lap traffic and a lapper slowed dramatically and the leaders stacked up on his rear bumper.  The slower car was able to clear the speedway and terrific driving by the top two cars kept the show rolling.

A caution flag again slowed the pace for the last time and the restart, just as the entire race previous to this point, provided intense racing throughout the pack.  Redetzke was still out front but Burdick saw his opportunity to make his move as he used the low line to get inside of the leader in turns three and four, and for the first time in the event, he led the pack.  Redetzke immediately moved to the cushion in an attempt to race Burdick back down, and for a lap, it looked as if the decision may work; however, the line simply was not there to sustain a consistent run and he was forced to move back down the speedway and settle into second.

As the laps wound down, Burdick was able to stretch his advantage over Redetzke, who himself put distance on third place running Koch.  Koch too had an advantage over fourth place on back where the racing remained two-wide for positions.  Burdick flashed under the checkered flag for the big payday as Redetzke settled for second. Koch was eventually run down and passed by Nick Oreskovich for the third position.  Tommy Richards, DJ Keeler, Mike Loomis, Eric Olson, Jeff Crouse, and Cory Davis all raced from deep in the field to round out the top ten.

AJ Roschen and Ashley Anderson won their respective WISSOTA Modified heats, and the feature went cover to cover for a caution free run.  It has not been since the days of Craig Thatcher that someone has had such a dominating year as Ashley Anderson is having at the Red Cedar Speedway.  His poorest finish on the year was second place to the five-time National Champion, Kevin Adams; and although it will never be known, and taking nothing away from Adam’s victory, on that night, Anderson may simply have run out of laps.  Tonight, Anderson had enough time to once again move from the eighth starting position to Victory Lane.

Early on, it was Josh Hessler from the outside of the front row at the point as he was chased by Cole Varsho, Daniel Bargender, and Cory Williams. As laps ticked off, Bargender moved under Varsho for second and Anderson had raced to fourth. Hessler stretched his advantage and looked quite strong, but Bargender found his groove and began to reel him back in.  He eventually caught the leader and moved through the middle of the raceway to overtake first.  It was short lived though, as while they were racing for the lead, Anderson used the high side to close in quickly.  Anderson’s momentum off the cushion sent him past both the top two runners on the front stretch and once in the lead, he simply drove away to the win.  Hessler and Bargender raced side by side for second with two laps remaining and Hessler was able to wrestle away the runner up position.  Bargender came home in third as Adam Hensel and Corey Williams rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified heats were topped by Nick Ayotte, Jesse Bryan, and JD Ford.  The feature was slowed three times, with the second caution being the most telling in the outcome of the event.  At the start, it was Ayotte looking very strong out front as Bryan raced in second over Shadow Kitchner in third.  The pace was slowed on lap two by a caution, but the restart saw the same order settle in.  Bryan worked the leader down low briefly, but Ayotte regained his composure and moved out to a slight advantage.  Ayotte continued to stretch his lead and was looking very strong until he suddenly spun on his own in turn two.  With Ayotte relegated to the rear of the field, it was Bryan now out front.

On the restart, Tony Bahr could be seen in the top three as Bryan led the field.  One last quick caution brought them all together again and it was Bryan out front and pulling away to the win under green.  Bahr overtook second until the final circuit, when JD Ford caught him and slipped by into the runner up position.  Kitchner drove home in fourth, and impressively, after going to the rear of the bus from the lead, Ayotte recovered to drive all the way back into the top five at the line.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks started their feature race with a bang as they drove three-wide on the first circuit and it was Adam Soltis taking a slight advantage out front.  Danny Richards settled into second as Andrew Hanson used the inside line to take third.  Jeff Nowak made an amazing save in turn two but was not able to follow it up in the next corner as his spin drew the only caution of the event.  The restart saw Soltis, Richards, and now Kyle Genett in the top three.  Under power, Richards drove below the leader and they raced side by side for over a lap before Richards would be scored in first.  Behind them, Hanson retook third as Dustin Doughty, the heat winner, raced side by side with Genett for fourth.  With two to go, it was Hanson under Soltis for second as they followed Richards to the checkered flag.  Soltis finished in third position over Doughty, who won the battle for fourth over Genett.

The Hornets have had a year of sweeps and this time it was Armond Love driving a flawless feature to the win after he topped the heat too.  It was Scott Cooper out front of the main event as Jeremy Johnson and Love battled for second.  For several laps, Cooper continued to lead as Love and Johnson swapped the runner up position multiple times.  It was Love earning second using the upper line with two laps remaining.  Cooper took the white flag in the lead, but Love worked below him in turns one and two.  The two made heavy contact entering the back stretch and it was Love moving out front.  Love led Cooper to the finish as Levi Price, Randy Stensgaard, and Zane Olson were scored in the top five when Johnson was not able to clear tech and was disqualified.

The Red Cedar Speedway is scheduled to return to racing on Friday, June 11, 2021, with the WISSOTA Race of Champions Qualifier make up race.  It will be presented by Keyes Chevytown and Dirt Track Specialties (DTS) with the Wissota Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, and RCS Hornets all in attendance.
