Buckarma & LeMieux lead the way at the Hill Raceway
By Edward Anschutz
(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 29, 2002 Race Report – The Nathan Bouche Memorial got off a slow start as mother-nature steadily applied moister just before the scheduled start time for the Hill Raceway opener. This did not slow down fans or drivers as 99 cars checked in to do battle. There were 40 Stock Cars, 30 Street Stocks, 20 Sport Mods and 9 Sport Compacts. Thanks to all the drivers who helped pack the track in.
Nick Buckarma picked a good night to win his first ever Stock Car feature at the Hill Raceway. His efforts netted him an extra $500 courtesy of Paul J. Georgia. Other feature winners were (Sport Mod) Randy LeMieux Jr, (Street Stock) Paul Diefenthaler and Calvin Stueck (Sport Compact).
In the Stock Car feature it was Nick Buckarma jumping to the lead on the opening lap. Buckarma pulled away until a series of cautions kept the field on his rear bumper. Kyle Resch and Kyle Frederick gave chase. But Buckarma held court, slowly pulling away from his competitors. Trent Nolan looked to make a late race challenge for the lead as he raced to second with 2 laps remaining but his bid for a chance at the win went away when he slid to high into turn 1. Buckarma led all 20 laps enroute to victory. Frederick took second, Justin Jacobson started 14th and placed third, Resch was fourth and Nolan rounded out the top five.
An extra $500 was on the line for the winner off the Sport Mod feature courtesy of Paul J. Georgia. Chris Kuchta grabbed the top spot on the opening lap until defending track champion Randy LeMieux Jr came storming by. The hardest part for LeMieux as he sped away from the pack was navigating lapped track in the final few laps. LeMieux dominated the event and scored the win. Cory Kemkes had a great race and placed second, Cody Rass rallied late to take third, Will Garceau had his first top four and Kuchta completed the top five.
Paul Diefenthaler was able to outlast Dave DeGrave to score the win the Unified Street Stocks. Waiting for Diefenthaler at the pay window was an extra $400 courtesy of the Weckler Racing Family in Memory of Wade and courtesy of Paul J. Georgia. DeGrave had to settle for second, Tyler Fox started in row six to place third, Jamie James had his best ever run to take fourth and Garrett Geyer was fifth.
Calvin Stueck held off James Riska on a Green, White, Checker finish to score top honors in the Sport Compacts.
