Benson Tops Rice Lake Speedway In Short Program; Double Feature Racing Slated Next Week

By Ed Reichert

Rice Lake WI, May 13 – Despite light rain that fell for much of the day on Saturday, the Rice Lake Speedway was able to get their seventy first consecutive season of dirt track racing under way on the fourth attempt to get the 2023 season going. Unfortunately, the rain couldn’t completely be ruled out of the picture as after all the qualifying heats and B Features had been completed, the rains returned at the midpoint of the first main event of the evening for the Midwest Modifieds. They were able to get to the halfway point of their feature race when the track got too slippery to continue and after drying efforts were unsuccessful and the light rains didn’t stop, the program was forced to be halted for the night at that point.

The Midwest Modified feature would see Zach Benson from Princeton Minnesota lead all the way to claim the first feature win of the year at the track. He took the lead at the drop of the green, passing Will Moelter for the early lead. He would hold that lead through the first yellow for a spinning car with three laps complete.

Benson would continue to lead following the restart but Mike Schnider, who started sixth, was on the move, getting into third and then passing Moelter for second with Cody Carlson following him . The race would have its longest green flag period then, with Schnider closing to within a couple of car lengths of Benson when the yellow flew just past the halfway point for another spinner.

Before the green flag would again fly, the sprinkles got more persistent and when the field tried to go for the restart, cars went spinning in all directions as the track was clearly too wet to race on.

The drivers then circled the track under yellow, hoping to dry off the racing surface so racing could continue. However, the rain, persistent if not intense, would not let up and after a few moments, track officials were forced to accept the inevitable and call the program for the night.

Since the Midwest Modifieds had reached the halfway portion of their main event, their race was scored as complete and these drivers were paid with Benson being officially awarded the win over Schnider, Carlson, Moelter and Cole Boston. All twenty three drivers that took the green were still on the track when the race was ended prematurely.

The drivers in the other four classes racing will get their chance to complete their main events next Saturday night. So it will be a big night of racing as along with a full five division program on May 20th , the four left over feature races from tonightwill also be held, making for a spectacular night of racing action. Racing will begin promptly at 7 pm.

The Trackside Collectibles 40 for the WISSOTA Late Models, which was also a part of Saturday night’s program, will be made up on Saturday night, May 27th. On that night, the Late Models will run the feature race from the Trackside Collectibles 40 plus they will run another forty lap, two thousand dollar to win race, the Swant Graber 40 which was already scheduled for that night. This will likely be the largest number of Late Model laps run at the speedway in one night in its long history and certainly an event that will entertain.

The speedway face book page will provide more information on this event which will have special event pricing for that night only. This coming Saturday night’s racing will feature the regular admission fees normally charged at the track.
