WENZEL WINS AGAIN / LAMBERT LEADS THE WAY AT THE HILL
By Edward Anschutz
(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 31, 2021 Hill Raceway Race Report – 110 cars checked in to do battle as Brett Wenzel held off a hard charging Bret Koehler for his second feature in a row in the Stock Cars. There were 33 Stock Cars, 32 Unified Street Stocks, 24 Sport Mods, 12 Baby Bombers and 9 Modifieds. Our next night of racing will be on June 19th for Hall of Fame Night.
Action was halted during the Baby Bomber feature as David Cox barrel rolled down the front stretch. Cox was ok but his battered machine was done for the night.
David Reinhardt paced the opening laps of the Stock Car feature until Bret Koehler came to call, taking the top spot on lap 3. Koehler pulled away until a series of cautions allowed Brett Wenzel and Larry Karcz Jr to close in. Wenzel worked to Koehler’s bumper down low as Karcz took the top side. The duo split Koehler high and low, with Wenzel taking the lead with 6 laps remaining. Karcz mounted a challenge up top but a bobble in the corner allowed Koehler to sneak by. Koehler took his machine to the top side and ran Wenzel down but it wasn’t enough as Wenzel scored his second of the season. Koehler scored a strong second, after starting 17th Devin Snellenberger placed third, Karcz was fourth and Josh Mroczkowski brought home fifth after starting in row 10.
The Modifieds made their first appearance of the season and it was Kyle Kudick drawing the pole position. Kudick jumped to the lead on a wide and smooth track surface as Josh Lambert and Greg Gretz gave chase. With Kudick working the low groove Lambert went to the top and chased down the leader. With 10 laps to go Lambert slipped by Kudick, bringing Gretz with him. Lambert led the rest of the way to score the win. A hard charging Gretz had to settle for second, Kudick was third, Brad Theys placed fourth and Russ Reinwald completed the top five.
Craig Dorner took the lead from Jarred VanLaanen on the second lap of the Sport Mod feature and never looked back, cruising to a dominating win. Cody Rass made a late race surge to place second, defending champ Chris Budzban took third, VanLaanen was fourth and Chuck Carmin rounded out the top five. The contest went green to checker.
In Unified Street Stock action, it was Cody Patten pacing the field until Dave DeGrave snuck by for the lead on lap 5. DeGrave’s reign up front was short lived as mechanical woes sent his machine to the infield, handing the lead over to Troy Muench. Muench held off a hard charging Shanon Guellete to score his first win of the season. For the second week in a row Guellete placed second, Ford Malvitz, Presley Harrington and Kody LaViolette completed the top five.
Adam Broehm was victorious with a clean sweep in the Baby Bombers
