Walter returns to IRA action at Beaver Dam Raceway

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 2, 2020 – After nearly a month away from the track, Josh Walter and the Torque Racing team got back on the throttle in Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car action at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Walter was among 29 IRA competitors on hand for the Jim Wipperfurth Memorial IRA event. The night got off to a strong start as Walter qualified sixth with a lap of 13.243 seconds around the third-mile clay oval.

After lining up third in the third 10-lap IRA heat race, Walter came home fourth to earn a spot in the 30-lap A-main and a spot in the first four-lap IRA dash. The 15th-year driver started fifth in the first IRA dash and worked past Brinton Marvel to finish the four-lap race in fourth place.

Walter started seventh in the Jim Wipperfurth Memorial headliner and raced in the top 10 in the opening laps on a rapidly changing track surface, which started to lay rubber during the course of the race.

Walter attempted to work both the high and low lines in and an effort to gain a few spots and was running just outside the top 10 when contact with Scott Biertzer along the frontstretch resulted in Walter spinning to a stop near the entrance to turn one to bring out a yellow flag on lap 17.

The spin relegated Walter to the rear of the field with 13 laps to go. The Plymouth, Wis. driver worked the rubber to maneuver his way past Todd Daun, Hunter Custer and Kris Spitz in the closing laps en route to a 17th-place finish in a race won by Jordan Goldesberry.

After suffering through a string of mechanical malfunctions and on-track incidents in recent IRA events, Walter was pleased to bring the car home in one piece after showing good speed throughout the night.

“We are happy to have the fuel pump and electrical issues straightened out that came up during the All Stars race at Plymouth and caused us to drop out before the start of the IRA A main at Antigo where we had earned the pole,” Walter said. “After everything we’ve dealt with this year, we were hoping for a good, clean night with minimal problems and that is pretty much the way it turned out.”

Walter and the Torque Racing team are planning to compete in an IRA tripleheader this weekend at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Friday, Sept. 4, The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday, Sept. 5 and 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wis. on Sunday, Sept. 6.

Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and warm ups start at 6 p.m. with hot laps, qualifying and hot laps to follow for the Harry Neitzel Tribute Race at the Dodge County Fairgrounds on Friday, Sept. 4.

Grandstand gates open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps slated for 5:30 p.m. with qualifying and racing to follow at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Gates open at 2 p.m. qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing to follow at 141 Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 6.

For those unable to attend, all three races will be broadcast live on pay-per-view at floracing.com.

“If all goes well, are planning to run the majority of the remaining IRA races,” Walter said. “We are looking forward to a busy September schedule and hopefully we can start putting together some better finishes in the A mains.”
