ABC Raceway Backpack Giveaway Program Cancelled
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, August 3 – Although badly needed in these parts, rain forced the cancellation of Saturday’s racing program at the ABC Raceway.
A series of late-arriving thunderstorms passed through the Chequamegon Bay area about two hours before the Raceway’s scheduled start time, making the difficult decision not to race easier for the Board of Directors of the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association.
Saturday’s program was to include a backpack giveaway for school-age kids, courtesy of the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the raffle drawing for the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsmen Club. The backpack giveaway will be held during the Mountain Dew Championship Saturday Night program, to be presented by North Star Beverages on August 17.
An alternate date for the Sportsmen Club drawing has not yet been announced.
On Saturday, August 10, the ABC Raceway will host its fourth annual “444 Memorial,” to be presented by Ashland Ford-Chrysler Center, which will serve as the championship round of the XR Northern Storm Series. Over 80 WISSOTA-sanctioned Late Model, Modified and Midwest Modified drivers have committed to the six-race, six-track tour that will include stops this week at Princeton, Ogilvie, Hibbing and Proctor in Minnesota and at Superior on Friday.
Saturday’s program will include qualifying races and conclude with the highest-paying features in ABC Raceway history, including $20,444 to win the Late Model main event, $15,444 to win the Modified A-main, and $10,444 to win the Midwest Mod headliner.
The Late Models’ portion of the tour will also be part of the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series, which itself is a season-long tour of 21 races running from May through mid-September.
The grandstand gates and pits will open at 5 pm, hot laps will start at 6:30, and the first green flag is scheduled to drop at 7 pm. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road.
