Terran Spacek Continues to Roll at Rice Lake Speedway
By Ed Reichert
Rice Lake WI, May 28 – The Saturday nightspecial event at the Rice Lake Speedway was the appearance of the Interstates Racing Association (IRA) winged Sprint Cars and while Scotty Neitzel of Beaver Dam won that event(see separate story), The WISSOTA Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks were also in action. And continuing to roll was Super Stock driver Terran Spacek who won his third feature race in the division in four attempts while the Pure Stocks and Street Stocks saw their fourth different winner in four nights of racing as James Rahn and Shawn Amundson visited victory lane on a warm and winds holiday Saturday night at the track.
When his regular Saturday night track rained out, Spacek loaded up from his home in Phillips and hustled down to Rice Lake where his success in the early part of the racing season shows him as the current track point leader. And he would add to that total later as he would lead from start to finish to earn his third feature win of the year already at the track, tops in any division.
Spacek would start on the outside of row one and grab the early lead from Michael Miller and quickly extend his advantage. Racing under the green flag for the first fourteen laps of the main, Spacek would extend his margin lap by lap. Behind him, Tucker Quinn, Kyle Copp and Simon Wahlstrom would battle for the second spot. Quinn had the position but Copp was chasing and eventually Copp would take over second and try to track down the leader.
Wahlstrom moved up on the outside and he and Quinn would battle for third with Simon driving by to take over that spot. Behind them, Eric Olson and Dan Nissalke would also be battling for a spot on the track.
While Spacek continued to roll up front and Copp tried to track him down, the best battles on the track were between Wahlstrom and Quinn for third and Nissalke and Olson behind them. The battle for third got too intense however, as Quinn and Wahlstrom got together in turn three and spun, triggering the first yellow of the event. Wahlstrom would call it a night and the race would continue. However, the now bunched up field found it hard to keep going in the proper direction as two straight yellows for spins and minor collisions bogged down the race at this point.
Finally, the third attempt was the charm and the last six laps were completed without incident. Spacek would pull away once again as Copp just couldn’t stay with him while the battle for third was again the hot spot. Spacek would roll on for the win over Copp and Nissalke would edge past Quinn to take third with Leslie Leu moving up to complete the top five.
Amundson would go wire to wire to earn his first Street Stock win of 2022 but his path to victory was much tougher than Spacek’s was. While he would start on the pole and lead the opening laps over James Clausen and Mike Knudtson, the driver on the move was Adam Soltis. Soltis would start fifth on the grid but it didn’t take him many laps to move foward and soon he was challenging Amundson for the lead.
While Soltis was looking for a way past the leader, also on the hunt was Hunter VanGilder who started seventh and raced his way into third and by the half way point of the race, these three had pulled away from the field and were having quite a battle for postion.
Soltis would get a strong run off the corners and try to drive past Amundson on the outside and lap after lap he would continue this strategy, but while he would get to the outside of Shawn, he just wasn’t quite able to complete the pass and would have to fall back in line. Meanwhile, Hunter was trying to poke a nose under Soltis on the inside to steal away second.
Two late yellows would pack the field up and while Soltis never gave up in his efforts, for the final restart he opted to stay in line behind Amundson and hope for a hole to open. It never did and Shawn drove on for the win with Soltis holding off VanGilder for the second spot. Danny Richards and Clausen would complete the top five.
The Pure Stock feature would be a competitive race for the first part of the distance until James Rahn got to the front and then after that it was a battle for second. The race got off to a shaky start with two yellows in the first lap and contenders Ryan Olson and Mitch Kesan both suffered flat tires in the early going.
Finally, racing would continue and Bob Thompson would take over the lead and Bob would soon be challenged by Rahn for the top spot. Rahn started eighth on the grid but with a few cars dropping by the wayside and some fast driving, Rahn was able to drive past Thompson and take the lead by the second lap.
After that, Rahn would pull away from the field until a late yellow bunched things up. The best race was for the second spot as Thompson battled with Cory Jorgensen and Bryar Zimmerman for that spot. Eventually, Jorgensen was able to get by and secure the second spot and the late race yellow for a disabled Bob Wahlstrom would bunch up the field.
However, there would be no stopping Rahn on this night and he would pull away from Thompson and then Jorgensen when he moved into second. Rahn would go on to become the fourth different winner in four nights of Pure Stock racing action. Thompson would fight off Zimmerman for third in a very close finish and Kesan would come from the back after his flat tire and drive back up into the top five.
The Pure Stocks will be back in action on Sunday night, May 29th as they share the track with the Super Stocks and Street Stocks once again as the Trackside Collectibles 40 for WISSOTA Late Models will be the featured attraction.
