By Edward Anschutz
(Sturgeon Bay, WI) 9/1/17 Race Report- The Hill Raceway crowned champions in each of its four divisions Friday night. Dave “the Bulldozer” Bouche reigned supreme in the Stock Car division, capturing his record breaking 5th straight title. Co-champions were crowned in the Sport Mod class as Cody Rass & Craig Dorner tied for the top spot. For Dorner it was his first while Rass earned his 2nd straight. In Street Stocks it was Dave “the Hammer” DeGrave taking home the title in dominating fashion. DJ Jorgenson earned his first ever title in the Baby Bombers.
A total of 73 drivers check in to do battle. There were 23 Sport Mods, 21 Street Stocks, 18 Stock Cars and 11 Bombers.
Shawn Havel took the lead from Kevin Luedtke on lap 3 of the Stock Car feature. Billy LeMieux made his presence felt, pressuring Havel for the top spot. As the duo battled the for the lead LeMieux clipped an infield tire, sending his car skyward. This wreck collected Havel, LeMieux and Troy Muench, sending each driver to pit lane as the caution flew on lap 8. John Anschutz inherited the lead as Dave Bouche and Bret Koehler gave chase. Anschutz led the remaining 9 laps, riding the cushion to his second feature win a row. After starting 17th Koehler’s night ended just before the checkered flag while running 3rd as he clipped an infield tire and barreled rolled. Koehler emerged unhurt. Bouche secured the title with a second place finish. Jamie Suchocki was third after starting 14th, Kyle Resch took fourth and Jeremy Anschutz completed the top five.
Ryan LeMieux looked to be the racer to beat early in the Sport Mod feature as he raced to a huge lead but it was all for not as his machine limped pit side on lap 3. This handed the lead over to title contender Cody Rass. Rass led the remainder of the event to score the win and become co-champion of the division. Jarred VanLaanen placed a solid second, Tom Stark was third, Craig Dorner took third becoming co-champion and Sawyer Haese rounded out the top five.
In Street Stock action it was Bill Hayes and Dave DeGrave duking it out for the lead. Hayes took the lead on lap 4 but was dogged most of the event by DeGrave. On the final lap Hayes encountered a lapped car, as Hayes went to the highside and DeGrave went low. As the checkers flew DeGrave was able to sneak by for the win and the championship. Hayes was forced to settle for second, Ford Malvitz had a solid run to place third, Andy Fuhrmann was fourth and rookie Chad Naze took fifth.
Scott Schlafke lead every lap of the Baby Bomber feature enroute to a clean sweep. Luxemburg Speedway champ Nick Everard took second, DJ Jorgenson secured the track title with a third place run, Tony Everard and Kyle Jorgenson completed the top five. Action was halted on the opening lap as David Cox went barreling rolling in turn 3. Cox was ok but his night was done.
