Richards, Knudtson and Doughty Top Red Cedar Speedway Feature Winners
Menomonie WI, August 11- As a part of the Shaw Trucking WISSOTA Challenge Series Duane Mahder 55 race at the Red Cedar Speedway, WISSOTA sanctioned Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks also raced full programs and the winners of those events were Tommy Richards, Mike Knudtson and Dustin Doughty.
The Super Stocks raced a highly competitive feature event which, after two yellows before two laps were completed, then went nonstop the rest of the way. Jim Harris had a great run as he led most of the first half of the race after starting on the pole. He was receiving heavy pressure from both Steve Thomas and Jeff Brauer who took turns challenging him but each time he managed to fight off their advances.
It would be Thomas on the high side and Brauer on the low side trying to edge past him and each time they would get beside him, he would manage to beat them out of the corners and hold on to his lead. Time after time this would happen but Harris continued to hold the point and beat off the challengers.
However, slowly but surely, Tommy Richards was on the march after starting on the outside of row four. Gradually he moved up and by the halfway point, he was part of the mix going for the lead.
Working his way into position, he soon found himself in second and the prime challenger for Harris. With a strong move off turn four, Richards drove to the inside and took over the top spot.
Once in front, he gradually worked to gain a bigger advantage as the fight was left for the second spot. Continuing his strong run, Richards didn’t let anyone get close to him in the late going as he continued to stretch his margin all the way to the checkered flag. Thomas had a great run for second as he held off Brauer with Eric Olson nipping Jesse Redetzke for fourth on the final corner. Harris did fade back in the late laps and had to settle for seventh after a strong early run.
Knudtson won yet another Street Stock feature after coming from the fourth row to take the lead late in the contest. Bob Wahlstrom was the early leader, as despite a smoking car he was able to hold off the pack for several laps. Rookie driver Travis Loew then drove past Wahlstrom to take over the top spot as Wahlstrom eventually had to retire to the pits.
Loew held the lead for a few laps himself as he looked for his first ever victory but Knudtson was just too strong and he drove past the rookie and took over the top spot. Once in front, he was able to extend his lead as the real battle was for position behind him.
Knudtson continued to maintain a comfortable lead and drove home for a relatively easy win with Ron Hanestad moving into the second spot late and claiming that position ahead of Danny Richards. Ashley Wahlstrom moved up through the field to get fourth ahead of Dalton Hazelton.
Jeff Tisdale took the early lead in the Pure Stock feature but Doughty was very quick to get to the front after starting in the fourth row. He passed his wife Krysta and then split the challenges of Kent Harmon and George Richards to get into second and then he continued his charge as he swept past Tisdale to take over the lead.
After a mid race yellow for a minor spin, the last seven laps of the race stayed green to checkered and while Doughty didn’t have a huge lead, he had a comfortable one that he maintained. The biggest battle was for second with after trading spots back and forth, Harmon held on to get the second spot with Richards close behind. Lucas Kallenbach crossed the line fourth but was disqualified following the event which moved Tisdale into fourth ahead of Krysta Doughty.
Next Friday night, August 18th, it is Season Championship night in all seven divisions. The rain date for that event will be August 25th. Next Friday night will be the last night for track points also. As always, race time is 7 pm at the Dunn County Rec Park.
