ABC to Host ‘Mid-Mod Madness’ on Saturday
Ashland, WI, August 5 — The “stretch run” for the 2017 divisional track championships at the ABC Raceway begins in earnest on Saturday night, with an enhanced purse being offered for the track’s WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.
The feature winner of the 11th annual “Mid-Mod Madness,” to be presented by the Lake Shore Cafe of Ashland, will take home a $600 paycheck, while drivers finishing throughout the feature field will cash in favorably.
Midwest Mods have been showing up at Ashland in droves over the course of the entire 2017 season. The Raceway has seen an average attendance of just over 29 cars per night in this division – quite possibly the highest nightly average of any PolyDome Dirt Track Series class run among the 50 WISSOTA Promoters Association tracks.
The Raceway’s Board of Directors has taken recent measures to show its appreciation for the patronage of the drivers in that division. Two years ago the Board voted for an increase at the upper end of the Mid-Mod feature purse for regularly-scheduled race nights. A couple of weeks ago the Board passed similar enhancements for the lower-finishing positions in the class’s regular-night features.
“It’s just a couple of ways we have found to thank the drivers in this class for being so loyal to our track,” Raceway president Eric Erickson explained recently. “We get Mid-Mod drivers from all over the region to race here every Saturday, and they deserve something extra.”
With an additionally boosted purse for Saturday’s show, there could be as many as 40 entries. And with only four of the ten previous winners of this particular event still active in the division, the odds are favorable that a new “Madness” champ could be crowned.
Those past winners still racing in the Mid-Mods are defending race winner Shane Halopka of Greenwood; Jesse Aho of Toivola, MI (2015); Ryan Adamzak of Ashland (‘14); and the event’s only two-time winner, George Dalbeck of Ironwood, MI (‘10, ‘12).
The WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks and Pure Stocks and the ABC Six-Cylinders will also join the show, as the final month of the regular season means heated battles to decide all five track championships.
Ashland’s Tyler Vernon took over the lead in the Mid-Mod standings after last Saturday’s show, with a ten-point edge on Adamzak. In the “big Mods,” Bill Byholm of Glidden holds an 11-point buffer over Steve Lavasseur of River Falls.
In the Super Stocks, Nick Oreskovich of Mason is up by 21 on Superior’s Scott Lawrence, and in the Sixes Marengo’s Scott Ovaska is clinging to a one-point margin over Tiffany Hudack of Ashland.
The most intriguing fight is in the Pure Stocks, where “young guns” Kyle Copp of Brule and Andrew Hanson of Iron River are dead-even in the standings going into Saturday’s action.
Hot laps will start at 6:15 pm, followed by heat races at approximately 7 pm. All grandstand admission tickets are free for this night of racing and fun. “Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream live on www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
