Leer Takes Second Straight Victory at Whelen Night

Unity, WI. July 28— NASCAR sponsored Whelen Night at the races on Friday night at Spring Lake Speedway. Matt Leer’s feature win in the A-Mod class is his second feature win in as many weeks at SLS.
Michael Truscott took home the feature win for the B-Mods.

Starting just outside of the pole, Truscott grabbed an early lead and persevered through many cautions.

The cautions helped Paul Niznik move from the fifth position to finish in the runner-up spot.

Andy Karl used the cautions to give himself a top five finish as he made his way through the pack from the ninth position.

The top five finishers for the B-Mods, starting with first, were: Truscott, Niznik, Kent Baxter, Karl and Scott Anderson.

Randy Spacek found himself in victory circle Friday night as the Super Stocks made their return to Spring Lake after one week of absence.

Spacek avoided a wreck after getting turned sideways during a restart, then corrected his direction and maintained first.

Pole Sitter Ryan Wiome was challenged by the 22N of Dan Nissalke for the second position mid-way through the race, but Wiome held on for the runner-up finish.

The top five finishers for the Super Stocks, starting with first, were: Spacek, Wiome, Scott Geiger, Nissalke and Joel Peterson.

Karl Genett held off Jared Lindner as he guided One SixX Motorsports to another feature victory at SLS.

Karl Genett, Kyle Genett and Lindner were three wide as they battled for the lead early on. Kyle Genett would ultimately take the lead, but left the race shortly after with what appeared to be mechanical issues.

After Kyle Genett made his way to the pits during the caution, the race restarted and Karl Genett took over the lead with Lindner in second.

Lindner challenged Karl Genett but could not pass the leader as Karl Genett held on for the victory.

The top five finishers for the Street Stocks, starting with first, were: Karl Genett, Lindner, Nate Hauge, Hunter Anderson and Parker Anderson.

Matt Leer dominated the A-Mod feature, finishing more than one-fourth of a lap ahead of second place finisher Chris Oertel.

The only caution of the night in the A-mod feature came when the 99L of Steve Lavasseur slowed to a stop on the back stretch. Leer did not flinch on the restart and continued to dominate the race.

The top five finishers for the A-Mods, starting with first, were: Leer, Oertel, Jared Loos, Paul Niznik and Cole Varsho.

Cautions plagued the Pure Stock series Friday night but Jason Havel survived the wreckage and collected his second straight feature win at Spring Lake.

Tucker Quinn took an early lead but had company as the 5 of Havel started to track him down. Havel caught up to Quinn and took the lead as the race neared the midway point.

After an early race incident with Jim Thur, Brent Hauge worked his way up to the third position from his starting spot in sixth. Leslie Leu and Ken Heser battled for the fourth position behind Hauge, that finished with Leu taking sole possession of fourth as the race neared its end.

The top five finishers for the Pure Stocks, starting with first, were: Havel, Quinn, Hauge, Leu and Heser.

Kasey Gross earned some extra cash as he started from the back of the pack and finished victorious for the Hornet series feature. Gross accepted a challenge from owner Scott Duval to start in last and if victorious, he would collect an additional monetary amount from Duval to go along with his winnings.

Gross moved through the pack without incident and was already up to the fifth position by the first caution of the feature.

On the restart, Gross briefly battled the 4R of Tyler Raab for second and the 32JW of Taylor Becher for first before taking the lead for the rest of the race.

Raab left the track later in the race for unspecified reasons. The 33S of Mark Schoone made his way up to the second position over Becher, but Schoone fell back to third as the race came to an end.

The top five finishers for the Hornets, starting with first, were: Gross, Becher, Mark Schoone, Jennifer Nitzsche and Ashley Schoone.

The night concluded with pit crew and mechanics racing.

Winners of each class of the pit crew and mechanics races included: Cole Schnabel (A-Mod), Carter Sapinski (B-Mod), Shawn Hose (Super Stock), Scott Genett (Street Stock), Duke Lue (Pure Stock) and Scott Zettler (Hornet).

Racing returns to Spring Lake Speedway August 11 for Mid-State Truck 2nd Annual Big Rigger races and Hands-on CDL Driving School Night. The night will include semi races as well as all regular racing series. Fan gates open at 5:15 p.m. with racing action starting at 7:30 p.m.
