Northland Super Stock Series Stop Set for Saturday at ABC

Ashland, WI, July 22 — In what has become the Midwest’s biggest and most prestigious tour for WISSOTA Super Stocks, the ABC Raceway will host night number two of the FastLane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series on Saturday.

The third annual running of the Series began Friday night at the AmsOil Speedway in Superior, and it is scheduled to conclude on Sunday at the Proctor (MN) Speedway. FastLane Motorsports & Custom Powdercoating of Ashland is the title sponsor. The Series will pay out over $20,000 in purse and contingency monies, with $600 going to each track’s respective feature winner.

On Saturday at Ashland, the Supers will run a 33-lap A-main in honor of the late Don Koivisto of Saxon, who sported that number on the cars that he piloted and owned for over 40 years at ABC.

The overall fund for the three-race tour will include payouts to the top ten finishers in points, starting at $1,200 to the Series champion. A healthy number of contingency awards are available to the drivers as well, including bonuses for those who compete in all three programs but do not finish in the top ten in points, “hard charger” payoffs to the drivers who advance the most positions in each feature as well as cumulatively in all three main events, “longest tow” bonuses for those drivers who travel the farthest to compete in the Series, random and positional cash prizes, and more.

The biggest bonus will be for a “clean sweep.” If a driver can win all three features during the tour, he or she will add another $700 to their weekend take, bringing their total winnings to a minimum of $3,700.

Upwards of 50 or more racers from Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Ontario have made verbal commitments to compete in the Series this weekend. “We are expecting a higher turn-out of cars this year than last year,” according to Series founder and organizer Dennis McCauley of the Proctor Speedway. “We also have many out-of-towners showing serious interest from as far away as the Dakotas, and possibly farther, who may attend.”

The defending champion of the Series is Scott Lawrence of Superior, who is far from unfamiliar with Ashland’s three-eighth-mile red-clay oval. Lawrence is a track-record 14-time points champion and a 54-time feature winner at ABC, which ranks him fifth all-time. He is also currently riding a six-year championship streak in Proctor and has several titles in Superior as well.

With that many Super Stockers expected to compete, just making the feature field at each track will be an enormous challenge. Besides Lawrence, other drivers expected to be up to the task include defending ABC champ and current points leader Nick Oreskovich of Mason; Proctor’s Kevin Burdick, who currently leads the Super Stock standings at Grand Rapids, Superior, Hibbing and Proctor; East Bethel, MN’s Dave Mass, who is in the thick of WISSOTA’s national championship hunt along with Burdick; front-running ABC regulars Jeff Klopstein of Tomahawk, Randy Spacek of Phillips, and Dave Flynn of Superior; former Red Clay Classic champs Shane Kisling of Park Falls and Eric Olson of Ladysmith; and recent area-track winners Shane Sabraski of Rice, MN, and Greg Kuklinski of Ironwood, MI.

The WISSOTA Modifieds, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks and the ABC Six-Cylinders will join the program. For the Mods and Mid-Mods it will be a double-feature night, as they will kick off Saturday’s program with the make-up of their July 8 features.

Hot laps will start at 6:15, followed by heat races at approximately 7 pm. Adult grandstand admission tickets are priced at just $11 each, and younger fans accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free. “Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream live on www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.

The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call , or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
