Oreskovich, Wilinski, and Bethke Each Win Their First of the Year
Shawano,WI,7/8/17—Konnor Wilinski ended a season of frustrations with his first feature win of the season in the IMCA Modified feature. Kevin Bethke also broke through for his first IMCA Sport Mod win of the year. Brett Swedberg won his second straight Late Model feature. Travis VanStraten scored his sixth IMCA Stock Car feature after having to come through the last chance qualifier just to make the show. While Clintonville teen Max Oreskovich secured the first feature win of his young career with a Mighty Four win.
Brett Swedberg, Mike Mullen, and Chris Engels went three wide for the lead on the opening lap of the Late Model with Swedberg holding the lead at the start finish line. Swedberg took to the high line and sped off. Mike Mullen pursued as Ron Berna raced to third. Swedberg, Mullen, and Berna set a blistering pace and separated themselves from the rest of the field. Late in the race as the leaders worked through lapped traffic Mullen had a look to the inside of Swedberg but could not muster a pass for the lead. Swedberg would go on to win the race followed by Mullen, Berna, Engels, and Troy Springborn.
Shawn Frelich led early on in the IMCA Modified feature as Konnor Wilinksi tried to find a way past. On lap four Wilinski was able to get to the inside of Frelich entering lap three and made the pass for the lead. Marcus Yarie and Jerry Wilinski soon joined Konnor in the top three. Driving the highest line on the track, Konnor Wilinski was too tough to beat and went on to win the race. Yarie, Jerry Wilinski, Jason Czarapata, and Mark Weisnicht rounded out the top five.
In IMCA Stock Car action Kurt Olson raced to the lead on the opening lap. Olson was pestered early on by Brandon Czarapata before Czarapata pulled pitside. As Olson led, Travis VanStraten worked his way through the field after starting 16th. On lap nine of the race VanStraten got to the inside of Olson to take the lead. VanStraten led the rest of the way for his sixth win of the year. Olson, Trent Nolan, Dan Michonski, and Mitch Stankowski finished second through fifth.
Third generation racer Jayden Schmidt led the first two laps of the Sport Mod feature before Brock Saunders took the lead on lap three. Schmidt returned the favor and took the lead back on lap four. Saunders would wrestle back the top spot on the following lap though. As the top two cars duked it out, Kevin Bethke began working his way through the field. Bethke caught Saunders on lap seven and made the pass for the lead on lap eight. Bethke would lead the rest of the race en route to his first win of the year. Jordan Bartz, Jason Jach, Saunders, and Schmidt completed the top five.
Josh Slewinski took the lead on lap one of the Mighty Four feature. Rookie Max Oreskovich pursued Slewinski lap after lap. As the checkered flag flew Slewinski was the first car across the line. Slewinski though would be disqualified in post-race inspection. Therefore, Oreskovich was awarded the win. Lucas Hacker, Calvin Stueck, Dallas Kralovetz, and Brad Wedde rounded out the top five.
Racing will continue next week Saturday with a 6:30 start time. Next week is Halloween at the Half Mile. There will be trick or treating in the pits after the races. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume. More information can be found online at www.shawanocountyfair.net.
