BRIAN MULLEN OUT DUELS BENJI LACROSSE AT OUTAGAMIE SPEEDWAY
(Seymour, WI) 7/2/17 Race Results- Brian Mullen made a last lap pass on Benji LaCrosse to score the win in the IMCA Modifieds at Outagamie Speedway. A total of 114 cars took the green flag. There were 29 Modifieds, 27 Sport Mods, 23 Stock Cars, 18 Sport Compacts and 17 Street Stocks. Other feature winners were Travis Van Straten-IMCA Stock Car, Kevin Bethke-IMCA Sport Mod, Paul Ambrosius-Street Stock and Mitch Mier-IMCA Sport Compact.
Josh Lambert opened up the IMCA Modified main by pacing the field as the pack gave chase. Benji LaCrosse was the first to break free of the pack, challenging Lambert on the low groove. LaCrosse gained the top spot on lap 13 but a caution on lap 15 bunched the field. On the restart LaCrosse went to work down low and Brian Mullen gave chase on the cushion. With the white flag waving Mullen edged by LaCrosse. Mullen led the final circuit, scoring the win and padding his point lead. LaCrosse had to settle for second, Mike Mullen was third, Lambert placed fourth and TJ Smith completed the top five.
In IMCA Sport Mod action it was Joel Jens leading early with heavy pressure from Kevin Bethke. Several early cautions kept the field tight on Jens rear spoiler. As pressure came from Bethke down low, Jens lost the handle on his machine, spinning in turn 4. Jens bid for the win was over, handing the lead to Bethke. Bethke led the rest of the way, scoring his second win in a row. Tailar Ness placed second at the line by a bumper over point leader Travis Hansen and Hunter Parsons. Keith Schmitt was fifth. The race had a lengthy red flag as Race Van Pay, Russell Franks and Jayden Schmidt were caught up in a big wreck. All drivers were ok.
Harley Diedrick led the opening circuits of Street Stock main until Lexii Ashcraft raced by for the top spot with Brady Baldry, Mike Carter and point leader Paul Ambrosius giving chase. A caution with 5 laps remaining set up a dash to the checkers. As the green flew it was anyones race, the top five ran 2 and 3 wide. Ambrosius raced to the outside, pulling even with Ashcraft lap after lap. As the white flag drop, Ambrosius blast by for the lead, scoring his second feature win in a row. Ashcraft finished second in her first run of the season. Baldry, Carter and Gary Kasperek
rounded out the top five.
Travis Van Straten took the lead on lap 2 from Kurt Olson in the IMCA Stock Car feature and never looked back scoring his first win of the season. In his first visit this year Shaiwn Wagner took a strong second. With a third place finish Jeremy Christians took over the points lead. Brandon Gagnon was fourth and Chas Van Ooyen placed fifth. Van Straten had his carburetor claimed by Devin Snellenberger, the claim was accepted and they swapped carbs.
Tony Everard and Mitch Mier exchanged the lead several times during the first 13 laps of the IMCA Sport Compact feature. While in contention for the win, Everard encounter mechanical issues, ending his night. Mier cruised to the win. Mike Mier, Nick Everard, Mike Zitzer and DJ Jorgenson completed the top five. Action was red flagged on the opening lap as Kevin Bice backed his car into the wall. He emerged unhurt but was done for the night.
