‘Race to a Cure’ Cancer Fundraiser at ABC Includes Free Admission

                Ashland, WI, June 30 — Friday night’s race program at the ABC Raceway will include much more than just an action-packed night of stock car racing.

                Northern Clearing Inc of Ashland, in conjunction with Heartland Communications of Ashland, will present the Raceway’s annual “Race to a Cure” fundraiser night, to help benefit the various cancer awareness and prevention groups in the Chequamegon Bay area. The rare Friday night program will include a full race schedule for the WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks, and the ABC Six-Cylinders, and admission to the main grandstands will be free of charge for all fans.

                Throughout the show, fans will be invited to help the Raceway raise money by donating to the area’s cancer-fighting causes through a number of different avenues. A free-will offering can be donated at the admission gates or at other collection points located at the track, and there will also be an ongoing favorite-driver vote during the program, giving fans a chance to donate at one dollar per vote, with all monies collected through these programs going directly to the overall fundraising effort.

                The Neighborly Bar of Ashland will be selling cancer awareness buttons, citing “No One Fights Alone,” at the track on Friday, with at least half of the proceeds going directly to the contribution collection. Prizes donated by the Neighborly Bar, gift certificates from Lake Shore Cafe of Ashland, and other prizes – including cash – will be drawn for from the names of the fans who purchase these buttons during the show.

                In addition, there will be live music at the track from 5-7 pm and a one-dollar “happy hour” special on select food and drink from 5:30-7:30 pm.

                “We are hoping to make this a community-wide event, and not just a race night,” stated Raceway president Eric Erickson. “This is such an important cause, and Northern Clearing has once again gone above and beyond the call in order to bring attention to this worthwhile mission.

                “This can be a great way for folks in our area to kick off the Fourth of July weekend. And you certainly can’t beat the price.”

                Almost as a bonus to all the goings-on, the racing action on the track has increased in intensity as the season has progressed. Last Saturday night former track champ Steve Stuart of Ashland used a late pass to claim the Modified main event, while Superior’s Dave Flynn was simply dominant en route to his Super Stock feature win.

                Wayne Stricker of Highbridge was at the front when time ran out on the Midwest Mod feature last weekend here, and Trego’s Randy Graham showed that he has become quite comfortable in the Sixes in garnering his second straight win.

                One of several visitors making a trip to Ashland last Saturday, Jason Havel of Rice Lake took advantage of an early-race restart to hold off the field for the Pure Stock feature win in only his second-ever run at ABC.

                There will be no racing at the ABC Raceway on July 1, but the track will get back into its regular Saturday night rhythm beginning on July 8, when it will hold kids’ bike races with the help of Chicago Iron & Supply of Ashland.

                Hot laps will start on Saturday night at 6:15 pm, followed by heat races at approximately 7 pm. All grandstand admission tickets are free for this night of racing and fun. “Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream live on www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
