Strickler Strikes Gold in the Fury at the Fairgounds
Shawano,WI,6/24/17—One night after scoring a $10,000 victory, Kyle Strickler won another $5000 after picking up the win in the IMCA Modified feature during the Fury at the Fairgrounds. Elijah Zevenbergen scored a big $1000 victory in the IMCA Stock Car feature as well. Jordan Barkholtz won his fourth IMCA Sport Mod feature and second in a row. While defending track champion Brett Swedberg scored his first Late Model feature win on the season.
The 30 lap IMCA Modified feature saw Kyle Strickler, a former Super Nationals champion, out of Mooresville North Carolina take the lead at the drop of the green flag, but it would be Nebraska racer Dylan Smith taking the lead on lap 2 of the race. Smith, a former IMCA Modified national champion, used the high side of the track to race to a sizeable advantage over Strickler by lap 10. Strickler, who is known by the nickname of the high side tickler, searched the track looking for an advantage. Strickler slowly began to close the gap on Smith by using the inside groove of the track. On lap 21 Strickler got to the inside of Smith exiting turn two and took the lead. As Strickler and Smith led, tenth place starting Hunter Marriott from Missouri raced his way up to third. In the end, it was Strickler hanging on for the win over Smith. Marriott may have had the fastest car on the track, but needed a caution flag in a race that went green to checkered, and finished third. Nebraskan Jordan Grabouski and Mike Mashl completed the top five.
Illinois invader Abe Huls led the opening 2 laps of the IMCA Stock car feature before Justin Jacobsen snagged the lead on lap 3. A lap four restart put Iowa racer Elijah Zevenbergen right on Jacobsen’s rear bumper. On lap 5 Zevenbergen took to the high side of the track to take the lead from Jacobsen. Zevenbergen led the rest of the way to secure his first ever Shawano Speedway feature victory. Jacobsen held on to finish second, while Abe Huls made a late race pass for third. Vern Stedjee and Kyle Frederick completed the top five.
Sawyer Haese started outside row one of the IMCA Sport Mod feature and led the first six laps of the race before Kevin Bethke, utilizing the top groove of the track, was able run him down and took over the lead. Haese stayed right with Bethke and as they battled for the lead Jordan Barkholtz reeled in the top two. As Bethke was commited to running the high side of the track, Barkholtz used the short wat around the track. On lap 12 Barkoltz put the pass on Bethke for the lead and never looked back. Barkholtz picked up the win in the caution free race. Bethke, Haese, Kyle Raddant, and Jason Jach rounded out the top five.
The Late Model feature saw Brett Swedberg take the lead on the opening lap with Aaron Wickersheim in tow. On lap 7, Nick Anvelink went to the outside of Wickersheim to grab second. A caution after lap 7 bunched the field up for a restart. Though Swedberg faced challenges from both Anvelink and Ron Berna, Swedberg held on to score the feature win. Berna finished the race in the runner up spot. Anvelink, Troy Springborn, and Joel Bennett completed the top five.
Racing will continue next week Saturday with a 6:30 start time. Next week is family night, with $15 admission for the family. More information can be found online at www.shawanocountyfair.net.
