ABC to Hold Race of Champions Qualifiers on Saturday
Ashland, WI, June 24 — Four drivers will qualify for a very prestigious event on Saturday night at the ABC Raceway.
The Safari Tavern of Ashland will be the presenting sponsor of that night’s Afco Shocks “Race of Champions” qualifying features at the historic three-eighths-mile red-clay oval. The winners of the A-mains for the WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks will earn the right to represent the Raceway at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, SD, during the WISSOTA 100.
Each WISSOTA-member track is required to hold a “Race of Champions” qualifying night during its regular season. The winners of the WISSOTA division features on those nights earn an invitation to compete in the Race of Champions for their respective classes in Huron. The finale for the Midwest Mods will be on Thursday, September 14, while the final for Mods, Super Stocks and Pure Stocks will be on Friday, September 15. WISSOTA-wide bragging rights and significant paychecks will be on the line at DSFS that weekend.
At roughly the one-third point of the 2017 season, four of the ABC Raceway’s five classes has only one driver who has managed a return trip to Victory Lane, while in the Mid-Mods there has been a different winner on each of the five race nights completed to date. Last Saturday it was Duane Dunbar’s turn to take home a first-place check in the Mid-Mod feature, as the Marenisco, MI, veteran earned a hard-fought win.
Dunbar’s victory – his first at Ashland since August 2010 – was matched shortly thereafter by another veteran driver who had also not tasted victory at ABC since that very same night nearly seven years ago. Greg Kuklinski of Ironwood, MI, added to his all-time track record with his 90th career feature win, in the Super Stock A-main, but he had a much easier time than his fellow “Yooper,” with an absolutely dominant run.
Kuklinski also stopped the string of consecutive wins in the Supers by Nick Oreskovich of Mason at three. However, one young man who has found the winner’s circle to his liking is Brule’s Kyle Copp, who scored his third-straight Pure Stock feature win here last weekend. Also returning to Victory Lane last Saturday was Ashland’s Kevin Eder, with a stellar performance in the “big Mod” main event that snared him win number two here this year.
Trego’s Randy Graham became a first-time winner in the ABC Six-Cylinder division last weekend, but Ashland’s Tiffany Hudack leads that class in feature wins with two so far in ‘17.
Hot laps will start on Saturday night at 6:15 pm, followed by heat races at approximately 7 pm. Adult grandstand admission tickets are priced at just $11 each, and younger fans accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free. “Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream live on www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
