Redetzke, Anderson Repeat as Red Clay Classic Champs

Richards, Flynn are first-time winners

Ashland, WI, October 1 — Jake Redetzke of Eau Claire overtook John Kaanta in heavy lapped traffic and held on for his fourth Red Clay Classic WISSOTA Late Model feature win in the past six years on Saturday night at the ABC Raceway.
The 41st annual running of the Northland’s traditional season-ending PolyDome Dirt Track Series stock car racing event, presented by FastLane Motorsports & Custom Powdercoating of Ashland and Tim’s Automotive Machine of Bloomer, also resulted in a third RCC title – and second in the WISSOTA Modifieds – for Ashley Anderson of Elk Mound, while Tommy Richards of Mondovi (WISSOTA Super Stocks) and Dave Flynn of Superior (WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds) each became first-time champions.

While Saturday’s portion of the program started off in bright sunshine and temperatures in the mid-60s, once the sun went down the weather cooled quickly, creating a fast race track and lots of horsepower, but also dense fog. In fact, at one point during the Midwest Mod feature the race had to be stopped for over 40 minutes while a heavy fogbank settled over the immediate area. However, once the fog lifted the show resumed, although a rearrangement of the remaining race schedule was made.
The 50-lap, $4,000-to-win Late Model headliner was moved up on the program to immediately follow the Mid-Mods, and the 26-car field of top-level drivers responded by clicking off the 50-lap event in less than 17-and-a-half minutes, slowed only once early in the run. Outside front-row starter Kaanta outran polesitter Travis Budisalovich through the first corner and set sail to a 1.2-second lead after just five laps, while Redetzke, who started behind Kaanta, challenged Budisalovich, along with Pat Doar and Lance Matthees.
The lone yellow flag of the race was thrown on lap 5, for a minor scuffle involving Jeff Provinzino, Tom Naeyaert and Lance Hofer. From there the race ran without a hitch, with Matthees making an outside move stick to take fourth from Doar on the restart.
Redetzke got by Budisalovich for second on the very next circuit, and then he tried a drive to the inside on Kaanta in a bid for the lead, only to be denied. On lap 8 Budisalovich joined the fight for the lead, running alongside Redetzke while the pair raced only inches off of Kaanta’s rear push bar. A distance behind the lead trio were a pair of very entertaining battles for position, with Doar challenging Matthees for fourth, and AJ Diemel and Nick Anvelink heavily debating sixth.
On lap 12 Budisalovich tried an inside move on Kaanta, but the two cars bumped hard, lifting Kaanta’s car off the ground for a moment. That left the bottom lane wide open and Redetzke took full advantage, slipping into the lead and driving away to a second-and-a-quarter advantage within just three quick laps. His pace put him into slower traffic by lap 21, though, and Kaanta and company were able to reel in the leader just after mid-race.
Redetzke got caught up trying to put a backmarker a lap in arrears, allowing Kaanta enough room to work his way by for the lead on lap 28. Redetzke got back to even with Kaanta’s door a lap later, but the 2006 RCC champ surged ahead to a half-second margin within a couple more circuits.
On lap 34, however, Kaanta’s bid for a second Classic title ended when Redetzke worked his way by on the low side in traffic for the winning pass, while Matthees, Budisalovich and Diemel followed in close formation over the next couple of tours. While Redetzke held his line patiently behind slower cars, Matthees made things interesting over the closing laps by cutting Redetzke’s lead to just four-tenths of a second – not much more than a car-length – at the checkers, while Budisalovich, Diemel and Kaanta trailed nose-to-tail behind him.
Terry Lillo headed up the second five, ahead of 2013 champ Anvelink, ‘08 winner Harry Hanson, two-time winner Steve Laursen, and six-time RCC champ Jimmy Mars, who used his defending champion’s provisional and started 25th of the 26. Anvelink set a new Late Model track record by recording the fastest lap of the race at 15.480 seconds (87.209 mph).
The Modified main event looked to be another fast-paced affair, with only two stoppages over the first 30 of the event’s 35 scheduled laps. However, the intensity increased over the closing laps, keeping Anderson from potentially running away to a dominant win, even though he did lead from green to checkered.
Anderson started alongside polesitter Steve Stuart on the front row and flew to a 1.23-second lead on Stuart and Mike Anderson by lap 3. Deep in the field there was plenty of two- and even three-wide racing on the smooth, sticky three-eighths-mile red-clay oval, but drivers did a masterful job of keeping the race under the green flag.
As the leader continued to increase his advantage, Stuart drew away from a great battle for third between Mike Anderson, Kevin Eder and 12th-starting Jake Hartung, who was on a charge. Behind them David Baxter and Kelly Estey led a tightly-packed group of cars dicing for positions. On lap 12 Hartung made a strong move below Mike Anderson and Eder into third, while 16th-place starter Paul Wrazidlo slipped past Estey into sixth a lap later.
The first slowdown of the run came about not because of heavy contact in traffic, but because of Joey Jensen’s stalled race car on lap 16, eliminating Ashley’s 2.4-second lead. Hartung took advantage and grabbed second away from Stuart a lap after the restart, but Anderson continued his march by pushing his lead to over a second again by lap 19.
On lap 21 Wrazidlo surprised everyone in the beyond-capacity crowd by driving low on Stuart into third. A couple of laps later Jay Richardson’s spin brought the field back to Anderson’s bumper, but again he got away by running a smooth line through the middle of the slick corners.
Dave Cain, who started 14th on the grid, took fifth away from Mike Anderson just after the restart and fourth from Stuart on the next go-around, while Wrazidlo threw every move he could at Hartung over the next handful of laps in an effort to wrestle the runner-up spot away. Stuart regrouped and, along with Estey, ganged up to retake their top-five spots from Cain on lap 26, and on lap 28 Wrazidlo saw an opening and slipped to the inside to challenge Hartung again.
On lap 30 the complexion of the race changed drastically when contact between Hartung and Wrazidlo sent Wrazidlo spinning; Hartung was sent to the back of the field for the incident. Stuart, now third, tried to overtake Wrazidlo for second on the restart, but Paul Niznik’s spin negated that move. On the next try at green-flag racing Jeff Tardy spun, and on that subsequent restart 22nd-starting Darrell Nelson took over fifth. Steve Lavasseur’s stalled ride slowed the pace on lap 31, and Stuart grabbed second from Wrazidlo prior to Tardy’s get-together with Brian Mikkonen to stop the race again on lap 33.
Just after the after the green-white-checkered re-do Nelson took fourth from Estey, and then he displaced Wrazidlo for third with the white flag in the air. But Anderson had the field covered and claimed his second Red Clay Classic title in a Modified and third overall by a winning margin of .495 seconds over Stuart. After Nelson, Wrazidlo and Cain in the top five, Estey, 24th-starting Jeff Broking, 20th-starting Jared Loos, Mike Anderson and Rick Niemi completed the top ten.
Ashley Anderson also posted the fastest lap of the race in a time of 17.307 seconds, for an average speed of 78.003 mph.
The Super Stock feature closed out the race program, but it also provided some excellent side-by-side racing for positions at the front of the field. Flynn’s sixth-starting racer stalled right at the drop of the green flag, forcing most of the 25-car field to dodge to avoid contact and ending his chance at a two-win weekend. Then, three laps after the restart, front-row starting mates Jim Campbell and Shawn McFadden Jr bumped and slowed, allowing Richards to slip quickly into the lead.
Richards paced every lap from there, although not without challenge. He was a few lengths ahead of a three-wide dogfight between Campbell, McFadden and Ben Hillman for second, and on lap 7 McFadden and Hillman cleared Campbell and brought Eric Olson along to fourth, leaving Campbell to contend with 2016 ABC Raceway points champ Nick Oreskovich. Richards had built up a 2.25-second lead on McFadden on lap 13, with Olson taking third, when 2014 RCC winner Kevin Burdick got loose and tagged Mikkonen, forcing the latter to spin on the front straight to bring about the first of the race’s four caution-flag slowdowns.
Olson immediately pulled alongside Richards’ right-side door panel on the restart in an effort to grab the lead – a move he would repeat on each of the remaining restarts as well – but Richards’ car was too strong coming off of the bottom of the corners. By lap 19 the leader had re-established a half-second advantage, while Olson was left to fend off Oreskovich for second, and the lead was up to a full second on lap 23 when the yellow flag was thrown for debris.
Richards fought off Olson’s challenge again for another lap before Don Muzzy’s spin stopped the run, and then, after Scott Lawrence and defending race champion Shane Kisling moved by McFadden and Hillman into the top five, Richards staved off Olson for a couple more laps before a three-car tussle brought about another delay. The fog began to roll back in over the final four laps of the 2016 season, and Oreskovich slipped by Olson for second with two laps remaining.
Richards, whose previous best effort at the Classic was a 12th-place finish in 2012, scored his first-ever feature win on Ashland’s red-clay oval, worth $2,000, just .298 seconds ahead of Oreskovich. Olson came home third, followed by Kisling and national points leader Curt Myers, who started 21st after rushing home Friday to replace a damaged motor and transferring via a B-main win.
Lawrence, the 14-time ABC track champ, led the second five, ahead of McFadden, Mikkonen, first-time visitor Simon Wahlstrom, and 19th-starting Keith Kern. Olson’s lap of 18.036 seconds (75.850 mph) was the fastest circuit of the 30-lap run.
The Midwest Modified 25-lap feature kicked off the big-money portion of the program, but the event had more than its fair share of issues – driver-induced and otherwise. No fewer than 12 yellow-flag slowdowns, along with the afore-mentioned fog, dragged the total race time to over an hour-and-a-half.
To add to the peculiarity of the event, a father-son pairing was involved in each of the first two stoppages. Veteran Duane Dunbar tagged and spun his boy Marcus’s car on the initial start, and then Marcus “returned the favor” (though not intentionally) four laps later for the second delay, collecting Alex Smith in the process.
During that first four laps polestarter Denny Cutsforth – making his first appearance at the Classic – held off defending race winner Grant Southworth, while Flynn raced a determined Mack Estey for third, and Mack’s brother Skeeter Estey challenged Eder for fifth. After the second restart Flynn, the Estey brothers and Eder raced four-wide for third, but the excitement was tempered when track champion Paul Suzik looped his ride.
Flynn worked his way inside against Southworth on the restart to take second, and on lap 6 the pair ganged up on Cutsforth, with Southworth taking the lead. But two tours later Flynn made what turned out to be the winning move with another low-lane pass. Mack Estey got by Cutsforth for third during lap 9, and on the next lap the race was slowed for Smith’s spun car.
That’s when the race was red-flagged due to the heavy fog. Track officials, with concerns for driver safety, allowed each team to bring a pit-crew member onto the track with a fresh supply of visor “tear-offs” for each racer’s helmet.
After the long delay, Darrel Hazelton’s loose car collected a couple of others on the restart, and after Tanner Byholm took fourth from Cutsforth on the next green light, Southworth challenged Flynn with an outside move. But Cutsforth’s spin on lap 12 ended his great weekend and temporarily nullified Southworth’s threat.
A Tyler Hudack spin, two-time RCC winner Shane Halopka’s stalled car, and Dale Suomala’s damaged ride kept the pace at a crawl, but during a two-lap green-flag run Skeeter Estey found some room on the high side and swept past Byholm into fourth. Hazelton’s blown motor forced a brief delay for a clean-up in turns 3 and 4 on lap 18, and Flynn nearly gave up his dream run a lap after the restart when he bobbled coming out of turn 2, but Southworth wasn’t close enough to take advantage.
Skeeter Estey continued his charge to the front by flying around his brother Mack for third with five laps to go, just before the last delay of the run came about due to a Wayne Stricker-Nick Koehler get-together. Southworth tried to go high in an effort to get around Flynn with the white flag in the air, but the young ABC Raceway weekly competitor stayed true to his pace and collected his third win of the year at ABC with the landmark win. Southworth, who set the fast lap of the race at 17.402 seconds (77.577 mph), was only .825 seconds back at the checkers, while Skeeter edged Mack for an Estey family 3-4 finish.
Byholm was fifth, while 2014 winner Michael Truscott, 16th-starting Koehler, and 24th-starting Cody Carlson came home sixth through eighth. Marcus Dunbar held off his father Duane for ninth.
On Friday two Mid-Mod drivers ended up on their roofs as a result of roll-overs. During the weekend’s first set of hot laps, Canadian veteran racer Don Craig got caught up with a couple of other cars and rolled his ride over, although he was able to make repairs and run in his heat race later. Then, during his heat Willy Thompson’s left-front wheel caught an infield-marker tire, putting the car up on its nose before flipping over. Neither driver was injured in their respective crashes.
Several businesses and individuals organized and contributed to bonus programs and contingencies to make this year’s Classic more interesting for both the racers and fans. Along with the $150 fast-lap bonus presented in each A-main by Northern Clearing Inc of Ashland, a “hard-charger” bonus of $125 per feature was paid out by Arctic Ice of Ashland to the drivers who advanced the most positions from start to finish. The hard chargers for each division were Mars (Late Models), Nelson (Mods), Myers (Supers) and Carlson (Mid-Mods).
The top-finishing RCC rookie in each feature received a $100 bonus, thanks to Lake Shore Cafe of Ashland. The top rookie drivers included Swedberg (Late Models), Wahlstrom (Supers), and Tyler Schrenk (Mid-Mods), who traveled for his first-ever visit to the northern Wisconsin speedplant from Ypsilanti, ND.
Kyle Bernhoft worked with the Raceway to create an online “Fans’ Choice” provisional ballot, where race fans could cast votes via the track’s website to award drivers starting positions in their feature fields had they not otherwise qualified. After over 2,500 ballots had been cast, Hofer (Late Models), Lavasseur (Mods), Matt Koski (Supers), and Smith (Mid-Mods) received those provisionals.
Champ Pans of Eau Claire and SSR Race Cars of Spring Valley combined to provide each of Friday’s heat winners with commemorative t-shirts, and Champ Pans also handed out heavy-duty shop mats to various heat race winners based on random drawings.
North Star Beverage of Hurley offered a “Pepsi Challenge” to drivers in Friday’s heat races if they could win from either the pole or from the tail of the field, based on the original starting line-ups. While no driver was able to win the $50 bonus from the back, Eder in the Mods, Campbell in the Supers, and Cutsforth in the Mid-Mods each collected an extra $25 for winning their respective heats from the pole.
Eder, with the help of Neighborly Bar of Ashland, collected over $2,600 from drivers, fans and local businesses for the “Bridesmaid’s Challenge” fund, which was split equally among the second-place finishers in each of the four features if they agreed to wear a formal gown for post-race photos in Victory Lane. All four drivers agreed to participate, and in doing so each of the four runners-up took home larger paychecks than did the feature winners – quite possibly a first in WISSOTA history.
A total of 194 entries representing four states and Canada competed, including 38 Late Models, 44 Modifieds, 50 Super Stocks and 62 Mid-Mods. Despite the huge field, Friday’s heat race action was completed in well under three hours, while Saturday’s program was completed in just over six hours, due in large part to the weather delay. The perfectly-prepared racing surface provided three- and sometimes four-wide racing for the fans to enjoy.
The Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association wishes to thank the many individuals and businesses who contributed so many man-hours, materials and resources to make this year’s Red Clay Classic another huge success.
