Generous Purse, Bonuses Await Drivers at 41st Red Clay Classic
on September 11, 2016 at 6:16 pmAshland, WI, Sept 11 — Racers competing in the 41st annual Red Clay Classic will have lots of opportunities to put some extra cash in their pockets.
The ABC Raceway will host the Northland’s traditional season finale for stock car racing on Friday and Saturday, September 30-October 1, with upwards of 200 or more WISSOTA-sanctioned Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds expected to compete from as many as five states and Canada. The popular PolyDome Dirt Track Series event will once again be presented by FastLane Motorsports & Custom Powdercoating of Ashland and Tim’s Automotive Machine of Bloomer.
Foremost among those money-making opportunities for the competitors is, of course, a favorable purse. A payout of over $86,000 has been set up for the drivers, making the weekend one of the biggest-paying specials in all of WISSOTA.
The payouts for each of the four features is impressive. Just to qualify for the Midwest Mod 25-lap A-main will pay a minimum of $150, while the driver who finishes first will collect a $1,000 paycheck. The Super Stock feature winner will collect $2,000 after 30 laps, but just making the feature line-up will pay at least $250.
All starters in the Modified main event will receive a minimum of $350, while a $3,000 check awaits the winner after 35 laps of hard work. And in the big 50-lap Late Model headliner the winner will have earned his $4,000 prize, although the offer of $450 to start the race isn’t too bad.
Bonuses have become a huge part of racing invitationals in recent years, and sponsors often step up in big ways to offer drivers great opportunities to make a few extra dollars. This year’s Classic is no exception.
Northern Clearing Inc of Ashland will again present a “Fast Lap” bonus. The drivers who post the fastest timed laps during each of the four features, based on the Raceway’s electronic scoring and timing system, will receive a $150 bonus added to their paychecks.
Two new sponsors have jumped on board to help with this year’s Red Clay Classic. Arctic Ice of Ashland will present a “Hard Charger” bonus for each of the feature races, paying the drivers who advance the most positions from their original scheduled starting spot to their official finishing position an additional $125. And Champ Pans of Eau Claire, primary sponsor of three-time Late Model feature winner Jake Redetzke, has contributed to promote the heat races for the Late Models.
The Board of Directors of the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association recently announced that the draw fee for all drivers registering to compete at this year’s Red Clay Classic has been waived. Drivers will need only pay the $65 pit-pass fee in order to compete during the race weekend, saving drivers from $40 to $90, depending on the class being run.
Other bonuses and promotions are in the works, according to Raceway president Eric Erickson. “We are thinking up some special race opportunities for our visitors from each state represented as well as for our Canadian friends,” Erickson recently hinted. “We want to come up with ways to show our appreciation for all drivers who travel to our track to be a part of this special show.”
One of the most popular promotions at the track in recent years has been the “Bridesmaid’s Challenge,” offering a bonus to the second-place finisher in each feature if they agree to wear a formal gown in Victory Lane during their post-race interviews. Details on this and other bonus programs are should be announced soon.
