Ashland, WI, August 30 — WISSOTA’s invitational season is just kicking off, but that means the 41st annual Red Clay Classic is only a few short weeks away.
The traditional season finale for stock car racing in the Northland, to be presented by FastLane Motorsports & Custom Powdercoating of Ashland and Tim’s Automotive Machine of Bloomer, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 30-October 1, at the ABC Raceway, and it will feature WISSOTA-sanctioned Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds competing for a purse currently in excess of $86,000. Upwards of 200 or more racers are expected to be in attendance, making the event one of the biggest PolyDome Dirt Track Series events in all of WISSOTA.
As one of the longest-established and most highly-anticipated short-track race events in the Upper Midwest, the Classic has also been one of the most successful shows in the region in recent years. So, for the 2016 edition, the Board of Directors of the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association agreed that it couldn’t hurt to “share the wealth” with some of those who have made the event so special.
“We are happy to announce that we are waiving the draw fee for all drivers registering to compete with us at this year’s Red Clay Classic,” Raceway Board president Eric Erickson proudly proclaimed last week. “Our track has benefitted from some tremendous crowds and excellent car counts over the past couple of years (for the Classic), and the Board felt that it needed to show its appreciation.
“By waiving the draw fee we hope to entice even more drivers to come to the Classic, and that in turn should give our fans one of the best race programs of the season.”
All drivers, regardless of division to be run, will need only pay the pit-pass fee in order to compete during the race weekend. The fee for all drivers and crew members to gain access to the pits will be $35 for each night, or $65 for a two-day pass.
A limited number of reserved seats, camping sites and pit spots for this year’s Classic are still available to the general public.
Adult grandstand tickets will be available at the gate on Friday for just $20, while on Saturday tickets will be priced at $25; however, adults can purchase a two-day pass for just $40. For kids ages 6-12 tickets are $12 each night, while a two-day kids’ pass is just $20. Young fans ages 5 and under are admitted free each night, but only when accompanied by a paid adult.
A reserved seat can be purchased with any two-day pass for an additional $10; reserved seats are not available with single-day ticket purchases.
Primitive camping sites on the Raceway grounds are available for $30 for the weekend. There is also camping available on the privately-owned property to the east of the track, but only on a first-come, first-served basis; no reservations are available through the Raceway for those sites.
To buy tickets or to save a seat or campsite, fans can call (715) 682-2672 Monday through Friday (evenings only) or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Reserved pit spots are just $30 each and are available by calling (715) 746-2390 (evenings) or by e-mailing to [email protected].
Friday’s Red Clay Classic schedule includes access to the grandstand parking and pits at 1 pm, the grandstand ticket window opening for business at 3, hot laps starting at 5:30, and heat-race action getting the green flag at 7 pm. For Saturday, the track and pit gates will open at noon and the grandstands at 2, while racing starts at 5 pm with last-chance semi-feature action before the four big-money feature races.
Other tentative activities include music and dancing at the track on Friday night, a scramble golf tournament on Saturday morning, and special sales throughout the Historic Downtown Ashland business district, plus additional activities throughout the community.
Prior to each night’s race program, “Z-93 Race Night” will provide up-to-date track news and weather information live from the Raceway on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com. The broadcast times will be announced soon.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. Additional event information is available on the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com. Additional information on the community is available by visiting www.visitashland.com.
