Class Champions crowned at Eagle River Speedway
on September 3, 2016 at 11:02 amThe 2016 Class Championship in all 5 classes came down to one night of racing. In the Micro Sprint 600 class, it came down to one final race.
Going into the night, Dylan Larson of Shiocton had a 2 point lead over his brother Denver, and a 4 point lead over Eagle River’s Ty Springer. Springer made the Feature Race the deciding race for the Championship when he won the Heat, with Dylan Larson taking a third, and Denver having to exit early due to mechanical problems.
That narrowed Dylan’s lead to only 2 points over Ty going into the Feature. Ty Springer made it clear right from the start of the race that he was out to win the race and the class championship. Springer not only jumped out to a commanding lead, but won the race by more than a half a lap. It wasn’t Dylan that ended in second, but Jerry Reif. Ty’s younger sister Tommi-Jo took a 3rd, with Dylan finish 4th. Denver Larson continued to have mechanical problems in the Feature.
That gave the Micro Sprint 600 Points Championship to 13 year old Ty Springer.
It was in the Pure Stock class that Eagle River’s David Blackberg simply needed to finish in both the Heat race and the Feature. However the former Ewen, Michigan, resident wasn’t going to simply ‘finish,’ but he came from the middle of the field in the Heat race to challenge the driver that was second in the points, Eagle River’s Don Scharf.
Scharf won the Heat, with Blackberg taking a second. That clinched the Pure Stock Points Championship for Blackberg. Just like in the Heat, Blackberg was not going to simply finish in the Feature.
The Feature went to Eagle River’s Jake Ison. Scharf gave Blackberg a run for the Points Championship by taking a second. Blackberg finished in 4th in the Feature to get his 1st Class Championship at Eagle River Speedway.
History was made at the 42 year old track when the Upper Peninsula’s Jesse Aho won his 5th Consecutive WISSOTA Midwest Modified Points Championship. It was his wife’s brother that dominated in the class, that being Michael Truscott of Chippewa Falls.
Truscott won his 14th Feature of the season, with Jerry Grasse taking a second, and Aho taking a 3rd.
“We entered the year wanting to win the Class Championship for the late Bobby Kleinschmidt. We knew that the competition is getting better every year, and by far this was the toughest year to win it,” commented Aho.
The Junior Sprint class saw 3 new drivers from Escanaba, Michigan make the trip east. The new racers could put Conover’s Dayton Rein back in the running for a Class Championship. Going into the final night of ‘point’ racing it was Phelp’s Dustin Kangas that had the point lead. Rein would not only have to keep his unbeaten streak of the last 3 nights or racing going, but he would need other Junior Sprinters to end in front of Kangas.
Rein won his Heat with Kangas taking a 3rd. Rein came back to win the Feature, but Kangas took a second giving Kangas the Junior Sprint Class Championship.
The only class where a racer would clinch the Class Championship by simply finishing his Heat was in the WISSOTA Street Stock class. Eagle River’s Ryan Valeria had a big enough point lead going into the final point race of the night.
Eagle River’s Britt Bromann won the heat, with Valeria taking a fourth and clinching the class Championship. It was Dustin White that won the Feature. Taking a second in the points was 1st year racer, Eagle River’s Frank Gasperini. Gasperini is originally from Iron River, Michigan.
The point’s season is over at the popular 1/3rd mile Tri-Oval, but the track will have one more race. That will be this coming Friday. Eagle River Speedway will not only run its regular schedule of 5 classes, but will have the Speedway Trucks racing. Spectator one-on-one racing will return for the final night of racing, along with special Powder Puff and Mechanics racing.
