“The Evolution of the Race Car” to be hosted in Rickert Park

(Freedom, WI) August 31 – The largest one day show in Wisconsin history featuring several decades worth of restored and replica race cars will take place at Rickert Park in Freedom, Wisconsin Saturday, October 1 for “The Evolution of the Race Car.”

A fundraiser for the Freedom Area Historical Society, the show is spearheaded by local race car builder and engineer Mike Randerson of Appleton. The founder of RanderCar Racing, Randerson has lured more than 150 different types of race cars to this massive show, some machines dating back to the 1920’s. “We’ve literally got cars coming from all parts of the United States,” explained Randerson. “We’ve got everything from Indy cars, sprints, modifieds, midgets, stock cars, drag racers, mini champs and a whole lot more.”

Among the showstoppers on tap for display is a Penske Eagle Indy car driven by Mark Donahue in 1973 in the Indy 500. The car qualified third that year. Ramo Stott’s 1970 Plymouth Superbird will be also on hand. “That was the first winged car to win a major stock car event,” said Randerson. “It won the ARCA 300 in 1970 at Daytona International Speedway.”

In addition Fred Lorenzen’s 1965 Ford that was run in NASCAR will be there along with a 1969 Ford Torino wheeled by Bobby Allison in Winston Cup.

There will be several cars with a local flavor too, including a trio of coupes once driven by locals George Giesen of Menasha, Bucky Wagner of Two Rivers and the late Bryce Spoehr of Black Creek. All three are the original cars as driven by the locals at tracks like Outagamie Speedway in Apple Creek, KK Sports Arena, 141 Speedway and Leo’s Speedway, among other tracks.

Local motorsports author Joe Verdegan of Green Bay will host a book signing as copies of his best seller “Life In The Past Lane” will be available for sale. “This will be as much as a racer’s reunion as it will a car show,” said Randerson. “We’ve got some cars and drivers coming from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Alabama. We’re looking forward to a great showing.”

A ceremony honoring the Freedom Fire Department will take place. An all day bake sale will be ongoing and a dining tent and picnic area will be available all day. Food and refreshments will be served and entertainment will be provided. The show hours run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for spectators is free while donations are appreciated. Randerson is still actively accepting exhibitors. If you are interested in showing off your race car you can contact Randerson at (920) 788 6409 or (920) 202 0245. The GPS address for Rickert Park is N4045 McHugh Road, Freedom, WI 54130.

The raindate for this event, if needed, will be Sunday, October 2.
