Eagle Valley Season Champions
on August 27, 2016 at 3:20 pmJim Falls, Wisconsin (August 25, 2016) The Eagle Valley Speedway closed out its 2016 season on Thursday, August 25, 2016, with the seasons championship races. Heats were lined up by points and the features were lined up by the finishing order of the heats. All six classes of cars including the EVS Hornets, EVS Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds were in action. Feature winners included Mike Anderson, Curt Myers, Michael Truscott, Danny Richards, George Richards, and Armond Love.
Firstly, this writer would like to correct last week’s statement reference track champions. Tommy Richards won the Street Stock championship and I inadvertently reported differently. It is important to note my error as Tommy is a great driver and deserves the recognition.
With a front row of Mike Anderson and Kevin Adams, all eyes were on the Modifieds in their feature. Both drivers are in the top five in National Points and a threat to win every night. Anderson dominated the heat to earn the pole and after a two laps battle secured the lead of the feature. Anderson looked in terrific form as he motored to a comfortable lead over Adams who was in his own league as he too drove away from the remaining field. With five laps remaining Anderson began to slow as fuel pressure issues developed. Adams smelled blood and began to close the gap. The two cars drove hard through lap traffic which included very close racing as they were both using every ounce to grab the win. It was Anderson at the checkered flag as Adams had closed the gap but it was Anderson’s night to hoist the checkers. Kevin Eder led a group home well behind the leaders, followed by Jay Richardson and Steve Hallquist.
The Super Stock feature saw Curt Myers and Tommy Richards on the front row as the two drove away from the field. Although Myers led every lap, Richards hounded him and legitimately battled for the lead in lapped traffic. Myers scored the win on his torrid pace to grab another National Championship as Richards settled for second. Behind, Danny Richards was also strong as he dominated the remainder of the field as James Cimfl and Terry Kroening rounded out the top five.
The Midwest Modifieds had a crash which was the most brutal impact this writer has ever seen in 35 years of watching racing. At no fault of anyone, a racing incident saw Bob Wood get sent into the turn four wall at full throttle. It was a horrific crash which took the breath of all watching. It was amazing to see Bob get out of the car seemingly unscathed. The design of the CCR racecar did its job perfectly and the collapsible steering column’s function likely convinced every driver of its attributes. Race car drivers are a tough breed and seldom show what they consider weakness, but I am sure Bob was in pain for the days after. It is great you are still with us my friend!
The feature saw an amazing race up front as the outside front row starter, Grant Southworth took the initial lead. Behind him, Michael Truscott and Nick Koehler battled low and high for position. The yellow flag flew for Denny Cutsforth in turns three and four as Derek Haas was called for the caution. The restart saw Cutsforth spin again but a stacked up start was to blame and he did not lose his spot. Upon green flag racing Southworth used the high side to hold the lead as Truscott worked low. Directly behind, Nick Koehler shadowed, looking for his opportunity. Southworth and Truscott began a series of clean slide jobs on alternating ends of the track. It was an outstanding show as Truscott eventually stayed in the lead and led the last short distance to the checkered flag. Southworth finished second over Nick Koehler as Shane Halopka and Jake Smith rounded out the top five. Smith came from the 14th starting position to be the hard charger of the race.
The Street Stock feature was led by pole sitter Mike Knudtson but it was last place starting Danny Richards moving to second on lap two. It took Richards little time to use the high line to drive to the point and rocket away to a straightaway lead. Durand Peterson raced with Knudtson for position nearly the entire distance but Knudtson was scored runner up. CJ Wagner and Travis Hazelton closed out the top five.
The Pure Stock feature had George Richards and Lucas Kallenback on the front row. Richards went on to lead every lap surprising no one. He stretched his advantage over Kallenback who in turn stretched the gap over third finishing Pat Smith as Dean Pronshinske and Nicholas Hazelton rounded out the top five.
The Hornets saw Dan Prissel lead the first three laps before Armond Love drove below him for the point. Brad York used the low line to close and eventually pass Prissel for second at the halfway point. Love stretched his advantage to the finish over York. Dan Prissel beat Chad Prissel in a nice battle for position, claiming third. Jess Seim was scored fifth at the finish.
The Eagle Valley Speedway has completed its 2016 season. The Weigel’s thank everyone involved throughout the year. Thanks go out to the fine weekly sponsors including Oium Blacktop and Kelly Oium Well Drilling and Pump Service who gave away a bicycle to one boy and one girl every racing night.
