Ashland, WI — The ABC Raceway will finish up the regular-season portion of its 2016 schedule with some added “excitement” on Saturday.
The award-winning Raceway has reslated its 13th annual “Pure Excitement 25” special, to be presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsmen’s Club, as part of its “Championship Saturday Night,” which will be put on by Pepsi, North Star Beverage of Hurley, and WIMI, 99.7 FM, of Ironwood, MI. And although the track’s entry-level WISSOTA Pure Stocks will be racing for the big money, points champions in all five of the Raceway’s regular weekly divisions will be crowned.
The twist to the special race for the Pure Stocks is in the way the purse develops. After the track set a base line of just over $3,400 in total payout for the 25-lap feature, including $500 to win, fans, businesses and other racers have since built up the purse by contributing as much as they want to whatever finishing position they wish. As of press time the purse has already exceeded $5,200, and the feature winner will have a check of at least $1,300 waiting for them.
The extra week of contributions due to last Saturday’s rainout should help this year’s event become the highest-paying in its history. Fans are welcome to donate right up until feature-race time.
In addition to the on-track action – which will also include a full slate of races for the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds, plus the ABC Six-Cylinders – the Sportsmen’s Club will be selling tickets as part of their annual fund-raising raffle, and the drawings for the prize winners will take place during intermission at Saturday’s races. The fund-raiser provides additional funding to help the Club with its various hunting and fishing safety education programs, along with other activities that the Club organizes for area outdoors enthusiasts.
Of the divisional points battles, one championship could be decided before a heat-race lap is run. Ashland’s Tiffany Hudack needs to only take a green flag in hot laps in order to earn her “show points” and wrap up her second ABC Six-Cylinder points title in three years.
In the Pure Stocks, Justin Weinberger of Park Falls needs a finish of just sixth place or better in his heat race to nail down his first career ABC championship, but points leaders Nick Oreskovich of Mason in the WISSOTA Super Stocks and Paul Suzik of Ironwood, MI, in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds will need to do a little work in both their respective heats and features in order to clinch their respective divisions’ crowns.
The tightest points battle going into the night’s action will be in the WISSOTA Modified class, where Bessemer, MI’s Neil Balduc holds a slim six-point advantage on multi-time track champ Steve Stuart of Ashland.
After Saturday, the Raceway staff will take the next four weeks to prepare for the biggest event of the season – the 41st annual Red Clay Classic. Over 200 racers are expected from three states and Canada to be on hand on Friday and Saturday, September 30-October 1, to compete for over $86,000 in total prize money during the Northland’s traditional racing season finale.
The Raceway’s live pre-race radio program, “Z-93 Race Night,” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information. Adult tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on anytime to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
