Three go Three for Three in Four Days
on August 21, 2016 at 5:22 pmJim Falls, Wisconsin (August 18, 2016) The Eagle Valley Speedway was in action on Thursday, August 18, 2016, with a loaded night of racing. It was the 15th Annual Lonnie Leu Memorial, the 1st Annual Northern Hornet Swarm, and the WISSOTA Race of Champions Qualifier race brought by Lisa Leu and Krug Towing! The rains had subsided and the track was ultra-smooth and blistering fast for all six classes of cars including the EVS Hornets, EVS Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds. Feature winners included Kevin Adams, Curt Myers, Michael Truscott, Danny Richards, George Richards, and William Voeltz.
With a regular night of racing held only four days after the rain date make up races, three drivers continued their torrid paces with three feature wins in the Valley in less than a week. Kevin Adams, Danny Richards, and George Richards, each completed the amazing feat. In addition, Curt Meyers won twice to move his total feature win tally to 27 on the season, and Nick Koehler grabbed a pair of features of his own.
The 2016 track points championships were claimed by Kevin Adams in the Modifieds, who used three straight feature wins to nip Mike Anderson for the title. Terran Spacek had a great season winning the Super Stock title as Nick Koehler was fast everywhere, including the Valley as he won the Midwest Modified points race. It was Danny Richards in the Street Stocks and George Richards dominating the Pure Stocks. Chad Prissel was the Hornets champion.
The Modified feature saw pole sitter Kevin Adams take the lead and although he was chased by third starting Mike Anderson the entire distance, he won his third race of the week at the track. Adams lead all 60 laps of feature racing action in the three events. Anderson drove to second followed by outside front row starter Nick Koehler in third. Jay Richardson and Justin Oestreich rounded out the top five of the caution free event.
The Super Stock feature saw Danny and Tommy Richards on the front row, but at the drop of the green, Curt Myers timed the start perfectly and split them for first going into turn one. A spinning Adam Soltis slowed the pace but Myers was strong off the restart. Tommy Richards overtook second as Danny followed. The top three motored away, each holding an advantage over each other and third being well over a straightaway ahead of fourth at the finish. A last lap pass four days earlier by Tommy Richards held Myers to a mere two feature wins in three attempts in four days. However, both had three top twos. Terran Spacek was scored in fourth as Luke Schultz rounded out the top five.
The Midwest Modified feature was marred with seven cautions which kept the pack tight throughout the race. The initial start saw a caution which sent Antonio Pintaro to the work area and unfortunately, out of the race as repairs could not be made. The second caution flew quickly thereafter as Jason Richardson and Cole Spacek spun with Spacek being called for the foul at the disagreement of many in the crowd. On the start, Grant Southworth took the lead but a caution for debris slowed the pace again. Southworth held the lead again as Tyler Werner looked very good running in second. Eventually, Jake Smith overtook the second position as Truscott followed him through.
Southworth continued to lead but a spinning Brent Voeltz slowed his pace. Again, the leader took them to green as Truscott discovered speed up high on the track and drove to second and then swept past Southworth for first. The racing action became furious as Smith moved into second and a yellow flag flew again for debris. The restart saw Southworth go low for second position and Smith diving even lower as the top three came off turn four nearly three wide. The terrific action was slowed again as Voeltz’s night ended with another spin. The restart saw Truscott lead as Smith drove low in four and pulled even. One lap later, Smith was scored the leader. Shane Halopka, who had been charging directly behind the fantastic race up front moved into second position. Truscott regrouped and found the high line to his liking again and retook second. With one lap remaining, Truscott drove past the leader at the line and went on for a big win.
Nick Koehler had issues in the race and was not able to try to race for his third feature win in four nights at Eagle Valley. Smith, Halopka, Southworth, and Bob Wood rounded out the top five in a race which was worth the entire price of the admission. Truscott realized the significance of the race win as he grew up watching Lonnie Leu race, noting in his post-race interview he learned a lot from watching him.
The Street Stock feature was lead immediately by outside front row starter Danny Richards as he made no doubt about the outcome and drove away from the pack all the way to the checkers. Again, he was three for three in four days. Behind the leader, Travis Hazelton held second until he was overtaken by Cody Kummer. Mike Knudtson raced to third as Hazelton settled for fourth ahead of Bob Seidler.
The Pure Stocks saw Dean Pronshinske take the lead with Lucas Kallenback chasing. Although George Richards started on the outside of the front row, he slipped back one position. However, when he was able to move down to the inside of the front runners, it became clear, his 14th feature win of the season was not going to be denied. It was three for three in four days for Richards as he motored to the point and held a comfortable lead all the way to the checkered flag. The race was only slowed once for a caution as Nicholas Hazelton lost a tire on the track and was unable to continue. Kallenback claimed runner up over Pronshinske as James Thur followed them to the finish.
The Hornet Swarm pitted 22 drivers racing for a $500 payday. At the drop of the green, Leslie Jackson drove out to the lead as the others trailed for several laps. William Voeltz and Sean Svee ran in the top three until just short of the halfway point. Voeltz used the low line to drive inside Jackson as they raced side by side for the lead for three exciting laps when Voeltz edged to the point. Voeltz looked to be taking command as Svee raced to second and set chase for the leader. Svee was able to close the gap but as they carved though lapped traffic, Voeltz was able to maintain in front.
The red flag was thrown as Anthony Fletcher pounded the turn one wall in a scary and hard crash; fortunately, he did not need medical attention. The restart saw Svee blast down low for the lead in one and two but Voeltz used a well-executed cross over to retake the lead before the end of the lap. Shaun Bangart joined the top two as the top three sped to the finish. It was Voeltz leading to the checkered as Svee claimed second by inches as he and Bangart finished side by side for second and third. Trever Reding and Brad York closed out the top five.
The Eagle Valley Speedway will return to racing action on Thursday, August 25, 2016, with the Season Championships featuring all six classes of cars with the EVS Hornets, EVS Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds be in action. Thanks go out to the fine sponsors each week, including Oium Blacktop and Kelly Oium Well Drilling and Pump Service who give away a bicycle to one boy and one girl every racing night.
