Lone Ranger: Brad Sweet only full-time World of Outlaws driver that has raced at Angell Park Speedway
on August 19, 2016 at 10:55 amSUN PRAIRIE, Wisc. — August 19, 2016 — Only one driver competing full-time with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series has raced at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. That same driver has also been victorious at the historic third-mile bullring. Who is the driver? Brad Sweet, who pilots the No. 49 for Kasey Kahn Racing.
Sweet, who won a USAC National Midget Series race at Angell Park Speedway on the Fourth of July in 2010, returns to the track on Sunday, August 21 as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competes for the first time ever at the historic oval in the Sun Prairie Sprint Car Classic, along with the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series and Badger Midgets.
“It’s nice to be able to say I’ve won there,” said Sweet, whose win also came in a Kasey Kahne Racing machine. “We’ll see if having raced there before or not helps,” he noted. “It certainly can’t hurt. I’ve never raced a winged car there, but having experience at a track usually helps. Hopefully we can get the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet car up front.”
In the race that Sweet won at Angell Park Speedway in 2010, he led just one lap, but it was the most important one, the final lap. Sweet also turned in an impressive performance in the opener of the 2009 Hall of Fame Classic at Angell Park, charging from dead last to a runner-up finish, after an early-race flat tire sent him to the work area. While it’s been nearly six years since he raced at Angell Park Speedway, Sweet remembers a couple of the nuances of the track.
“Angell Park (Speedway) is a flat track and has an inside guardrail,” shared Sweet. “It’s pretty small, so there should be some pretty tight racing action for us. They have made some changes to the track and have widened it out, but it’s still a small track and that certainly takes a little different mindset that racing on the big tracks. We’ll have to take a look at it when we get there and go from there.”
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series has raced twice at Angell Park Speedway this season, with Scotty Thiel picking up the win in both of those races. Bill Balog, a multi-time IRA champion, defeated the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series earlier this season in Wisconsin at Beaver Dam Raceway in the Jim “JB” Boyd Memorial, earning his first-career Outlaws win in the process. Sweet looks forward to the added competition that will await the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Angell Park.
“There will be some local guys that have more experience than us there and they should run well,” Sweet noted. “The Outlaws guys will also be tough as always. We go to so many different tracks that you have to be able to adapt quick, with the handful of hot laps that you get. We’ll go in and give it our best shot.”
Sweet enters the Sun Prairie Sprint Car Classic third in points, just five markers out of second. The California native led the standings for the first four-plus months of the season. Sweet has seven wins thus far in 2016 to go along with 46 top-10 finishes, of which 33 are top-five performances. He leads the series with 11 Fast Time awards. Around 25 nights of racing remain on the 2016 calendar for Sweet and his fellow World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competitors.
“There are still some tight point battles and we want to finish the season out as strong as we can,” said Sweet. “We are just a few points out of second and battling our teammate (Daryn Pittman) for third and fourth. We don’t really have any crazy goals or expectations. We just want to finish the year strong. If we finish second, that’s great, if we end up fourth, that’s just how it ended up. We’ll give it our best effort either way.”
