Schmidt Dominates Late Models
on July 18, 2016 at 2:27 pmMenomonie, Wisconsin (July 15, 2016) Friday, July 15, 2016, the Red Cedar Speedway held the Race of Champions Qualifiers presented by Trail Dodge Chrysler Jeep and Serve Pro in memory of Private First Class, Tyler Mathews. $100 was donated to a random driver in each class by the luck of the roll of dice. It was a terrific night of racing with great friends and his family sharing his memory with laughter. The family gave the extra money to Late Models – John Kaanta (4th), Modifieds – Dustin Nelson (9th), Super Stocks – Lukas Koski (17th), Midwest Modifieds – Mark Thomas (17th), Street Stocks – Hunter Vangilder (3rd), Pure Stocks – Pat Smith (8th), Hornets – Ross Hoffman (12th).
All seven classes of cars were in attendance as the Hornets, Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models competed. Feature winners included Jim Schmidt, Jake Hartung, Dustin Nelson, Nick Koehler, Mike Knudtson, George Richards, and Derrick Johnson.
The Late Model feature was led by Jim Schmidt and Mark Hessler as Schmidt moved to the lead and led the entire distance cover to cover in the caution free event. Rick Hanestad overtook Hessler for second as Kaanta raced to finish fourth as the track locked down at the finish.
The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds were led to green by Jake Hartung as Cory Mahder took the lead from the outside of row one. Hartung overtook the lead from Mahder and pulled away from the pack. Seventh starting Mike Anderson dove below a pack of racers to move to fourth and raced door to door with Ashley Anderson. After a long and intense battle it was Mike claiming third over Ashley as the two finished behind Mahder and the winner, Hartung.
The Johnson Motors Super Stocks were paced by Dustin Nelson and Steve Thomas as Nelson led lap one. On lap two, Nelson’s biggest competitor, Curt Myers stormed on the high side and shot down into third from his eighth place starting position. The yellow flag flew as Troy Fransway stalled turn one. On the restart a battle between Nelson and Myers ensued as Nelson ran the bottom line and Myers attacked on the high side. The two swapped the point until Nelson moved to a car length advantage. Once again, the caution flew for Dave Shackleton as he was clearing the track. On the restart Nelson held the lead as Myers moved to race door to door. Behind the leaders, Thomas and Lucas Plank waged a side by side war for many laps until Plank broke free and started closing on Myers. Nelson moved to the point on his own as Plank brought the crowd to the edge of their seats as he closed even with Myers at the white flag but settled for third by inches at the finish.
The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds found Nick Koehler quickly moving out to a near straight stretch lead over Michael Truscott in second. A little further behind Robbie Johnson was overtaken by Gunnar Watkins who had won a battled with Jake Smith for position. The yellow flag flew for Bob Wood and Jason Richardson spinning in turn one, resetting the field and dissolving Koehler’s huge lead. He controlled the restart but soon another yellow was thrown for a Denny Cutsforth spin in turn four. Upon the restart, again Koehler remained strong, leading the entire way to the checkers. Truscott was scored in second over Watkins.
The Street Stock feature saw Cody Kummer move to the front early as the leaders bobbled in turn two. Kummer held strong in front as exciting battles occurred all the way back to a door to door race between Ashley Wahlstrom and Kevin Bogdanovic in the rear. Up in front Micheal Knudtson closed on Kummer and used the top line to overtake the lead. Knudtson continued his Menomonie dominance as he led to the finish over Kummer and third finishing Hunter Vangilder.
The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks were paced by Pat Smith and Kent Harmon with Harmon taking the lead early. A couple laps in a yellow was thrown when Lucas Kallenbach spun in turn two collecting Pat Smith. Smith’s night ended with a flat tire. On the restart, Harmon held his position in the lead, but George Richards and Dustin Doughty raced door to door wanting to take home the win. Again the caution flew due to a James Thur spin in turn two. With only a few laps remaining, Richards took advantage of the restart and drove to the lead and led the parade to the checkers over Harmon and Doughty.
The WAYY 790 Hornets feature was led early by Bradley York while Derrick Johnson and Jess Seim battled door to door behind him. It was William Voeltz who swiftly drove below everyone to overtake the point. However, the dominate Derrick Johnson flexed his muscles and passed for the lead and held it through one caution period due to Dean Butler stalling in turn one. It was Johnson at the finish over a strong running Sean Svee who claimed second. William Voeltz rounded out the top three.
The Red Cedar Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, July 22, 2016, with the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and WAYY 790 Hornets.
