Kyle Gennett win’s 1st Challenge!
on July 16, 2016 at 10:26 amWhile the odds makers were predicting one of the regular Eagle River Speedway WISSOTA Street Stock racers to be the ones to be betting on, Auburndale, Wisconsin’s, Kyle Gennett set his sights on pulling off the upset of the year.
The Central Wisconsin racer made his debut at the challenging Tri-Oval a success by winning the first of the 2-race Eagle River Speedway WISSOTA Street Stock Challenge Series. While many would expect to read the following line as to how Kyle Gennett held off the defending class high point champion, Nate Langberg, or even past class champion, Jordan Kurtti…read on.
Kyle Gennett had to hold off his brother, Karl Gennett to take the lead in the Challenge Series points. It will be the top 5 drivers after the two races that will share in an additional purse of $1500.00. Langberg took a 3rd, while Kurtti was involved in a mishap earlier in the Heat race and was unable to run in the Feature.
Kyle Gennett was not the only new driver to show the ‘regulars’ the ropes. Northern Wisconsin’s Wayne Stricker made his second trip north worthwhile by edging out the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Class Champion the last 4 years, Toivola, Michigan’s, Jesse Aho. It was a feature race that had the fans standing.
Stricker would get out to a commanding lead after 2 re-starts. However it was the 3rd and final re-start with only 3 laps to go that Aho and Sticker put on a show for the fans! With Stricker having success by running a higher line on the track, Aho made the move to get on the inside on the final lap. The two were side by side with Aho on the inside, Stricker on the outside, and side by side to the flag-pole.
Stricker got the win by a couple feet at the finish line.
“What a race! With the way (Wayne) Stricker would pull away from the field after the first two re-starts, who would have thought that Jesse (Aho) would have stuck with him, than race side by side on that final lap…was that exciting!” commented Track Promoter, Kevin Dawson.
Neither Stricker nor Aho really knew who won the race. Thus both of them never took the trip to the Auto Value Victory Lane.
One cannot blame Eagle River’s David Blackberg from saying that he saves his best driving for the Feature. Once again Blackberg failed to win a Heat race, but went on to win the Feature. Once again this week, Eagle River’s Don Scharf and Rhinelander’s Dustin Miller won the two Heat races, but ended with a 2nd and 4th respectively in the Feature. The previous race Feature winner, Jason Eisel of Rhinelander took a 3rd in the Feature.
It was a manufacturer shoot-out in the Micro Sprint 600 and the special Side by Side/UTV Off Road Race.
Ty Springer’s Honda held off Dylan Larson’s Yamaha, and Denver Larson’s Suzuki to win the Micro Sprint 600 Feature.
Rhinelander’s Ian Miller and his Arctic Cat Wildcat beat Gladstone, Michigan’s, Jeffrey Stemick’s Polaris RZR to win the feature in the Side by Side Challenge. Stemick won the earlier Heat. This race took place on both the infield and a portion of the Tri-Oval.
Conover’s Dayton Rein continues his trek to winning the Junior Sprint point’s championship by winning the Junior Sprint Feature. Earlier in the night, Phelps Dustin Kangas won the Heat race.
It will be this coming Friday Night that the popular Northern Wisconsin track will have the second stage in the 3-race Eagle River Speedway Challenge Series for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Phelps Jerry Grasse held off Aho for the win in the 1st race of this challenge series. The night will also have the Speedway Trucks making a return, and Spectator 1 on 1 racing. All this is in addition to the regular weekly racing in the WISSOTA Street Stock, Pure Stock, Micro Sprint 600’s and Junior Sprints.
