Midwest Sprint Car Association July 8, 2016 Dodge County Fairgrounds
on July 9, 2016 at 2:40 pmA field of seventeen Midwest Sprintcar Association cars and drivers invaded the monster half-mile at the Dodge County Fairgrounds on a perfect summer evening.
The drivers brought with them a total of nine MSA Championships over the twenty-one year history of the organization.
The lineup for the A-main saw 2015 Champion Brandon McMullen (Plymouth) on the pole with Chris Clayton (Waldo) to his right. 2014 Champion Paul Pokorski sat inside of the second row with second year chauffeur Andrew Westphal (Fond du Lac) on the outside.
Two-time champion Danny Schlafer (Sussex) had a perfect view from the third row with Kurt Davis (West Allis) another two-time champion lined up in the fourth row just ahead of Lance Fassbender (Burnett) and Donny Goeden (Kewaskum)
At the drop of the green it was McMullen immediately showing the field that it was going to be a matter of, can anybody keep up with his fast pace. Wayne Modjeski (Oak Creek) started fifteenth but immediately showed why he is a past champion as he started passing cars.
The yellow flag was displayed after Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) and Fassbender stopped in turn four. Wondra would be hauled away on the hook and Fassbender would restart at the tail only to drop out later.
On the restart the field roared off turn four only to see Tim Haddy (Waupun) and Goeden get together just before the flagstand resulting in the #10W machine of Goeden taking a nasty tumble. He would be OK but his car was extensively damage. Haddy’s #21H had enough damage that he was also parked for the remainder of the event.
On the restart McMullen’s big lead was gone and the field saw Chris Clayton (Waldo) in second and Paul Pokorski (West Bend), Davis and Danny Schlafer rounding out the top-five.
Quickly Davis would move ahead but that was short lived as the left-rear wheel came off in turn one and he was also finished. Modjeski was continuing has charge forward but the race ended his fine run.
McMullen would be first to the checkers grabbing his ninth career MSA Feature win. Schlafer would be second with Pokorski, Modjeski and Westphal rounding out the top-five.
The next five finishers were, Clayton, Will Gerritts (Waupun) Tyler Brabant (Waupun, Al Schlafer (Sussex) and Doug Pietz (Milwaukee).
Heat races saw Fassbender build a big lead and finish ahead of Goeden who had to come from the third row. The second heat saw a wing-to-wing dual between Davis and Haddy with Davis prevailing.
