Kids Take to the Track at ABC on Saturday
on July 8, 2016 at 4:21 amAshland, WI — After a three-week hiatus, the ABC Raceway will fire up the second half of its 2016 schedule on Saturday night with one of its most popular and longest-running yearly events.
During the kids’ bike races, to be presented by Chicago Iron & Supply of Ashland, children ages 2 through pre-teen will be grouped into various age divisions and invited to race their bicycles on the same red-clay oval as their heroes. It’s an event that has been a staple of the annual schedule at the national award-winning stock car racing facility in northern Wisconsin for decades.
“Many of the drivers we now have competing on a weekly basis at the ABC Raceway got their starts by racing their bikes out here years ago,” according to Raceway Board president Eric Erickson. “Who knows? Maybe on Saturday night we’ll see a bike race winner who will one day become a racing star of the future!”
The bike races will be included along with a complete slate of qualifying heats and feature action for the track’s five weekly divisions – WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, plus the ABC Raceway Six-Cylinders. The program will kick off with the make-up feature owed to the Midwest Mods from the shortened May 21 season opener.
The track last saw racing action on June 18. Since that night, a severe thunderstorm wiped out any chance of running the June 25 program, and the Raceway Board had voted last Winter not scheduled a show on July 2, in honor of the Independence Day weekend.
“Our racers, our fans, and our staff are excited about getting back to the track,” Erickson said earlier this week. “We have a very exciting line-up of race programs set for the rest of the summer, and we hope folks will make their way to the Raceway and find out what all the excitement is about.”
The Raceway’s live pre-race radio program, “Z-93 Race Night,” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information. Hot laps begin at 6:15 pm, followed by the first of the two make-up features at 7. Adult tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on anytime to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
