Menomonie, Wisconsin (July 01, 2016) Friday, July 01, 2016, the Red Cedar Speedway was able to race for the second week in a row as beautiful weather kicked off the Fourth of July weekend. Dean & Sue’s Bar & Grill and Dick’s RV sponsored the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Late Models along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and WAYY 790 Hornets. There were no Modifieds on the card. Feature winners included Rick Hanestad, Eric Olson, Clark Schwartz, Mike Knudtson, Dustin Doughty, and Derrick Johnson.
The T.L. Sinz Plumbing Late Models were paced by Jim Schmidt and Mike Prochnow as Schmidt drove to the lead at the drop of the green. Rick Hanestad moved to second but Schmidt led past the halfway marker. A spin set up very heavy contact between Joel Collins and Rick Ming ending both driver’s nights. The lone caution of the event was the break Hanestad was seeking as he was trying to end a near two year drought from victory lane. Although the winners circle has eluded Hanestad, he is always a top contender for both feature wins and track championships. As the field went back to green, he got his nose under the leader coming off turn two as the two drag raced for the lead down the backstretch. They made side by side contact as it was Hanestad proving to be too strong to hold off. Once in the lead, Hanestad pulled away from the pack to win his 88th career feature in the Late Models. John Kaanta moved to second after having started seventh and Jake Redtzke slipped by Schmidt late in the going for third. Steve Isenberg was scored fifth at the checkered flag.
The Johnson Motors Super Stocks raced for a $700 payday and the racing action was good. Rick Hallquist shared the front row with Cory Davis as Hallquist took the lead on the green. Gunnar Watkins worked hard to get below Hallquist, but Hallquist did more than merely hold a line as he was fast pacing the field. On lap four, however, Watkins made the move and snatched the lead. Shortly thereafter, Lukas Plank was unable to clear the racing surface upon a breakdown drawing the only caution of the event. Watkins lead Hallquist, Davis, Eric Olson, and Bart Steffen in the top five back to green. Hallquist was aggressively fast as he got under Watkins for the point. The two raced hard for the lead and made contact in turn three. Both cars pushed up out of the groove and were freight trained as Watkins slipped back to fifth and Hallquist even further. The race rightfully remained under green and Hallquist retired from the event.
It was Eric Olson who led the parade past the leaders as Cory Davis followed. Steffen overtook the second position as he seems to shine when the tracks slick off. Ninth starting Curt Myers broke into the top three late in the event. It was Olson claiming the big check as the veteran drove unscathed to the checkers. Steffen, Myers, Davis, and Watkins rounded out the top five.
The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modified were paced by Clark Schwartz and Gunner Watkins. A week after mechanical problems before the car was even unloaded, ruined his night, it was Schwartz who was too tough for all challengers. He led every lap in the event, and although he didn’t pull away from the field, looked very fast in his efforts. After struggling the week prior and the feature being called short due to time constraints, the Midwest Modified were only allowed two cautions before being relegated to single file restarts.
At the green, the caution flew early causing a complete restart. When up to speed on the second attempt, Josh Hessler pounded the wall between turns one and two and the pace was slowed. Under racing action again, Schwartz led as Watkins worked in second. Shane Halopka and Nick Koehler attacked the cushion as Travis Anderson followed in fifth down low. The caution flew again for debris on the raceway and the single file restarts were initiated. Under green, Swearingen, who had started fourth and dropped out of the top five, found his way back in as he too found the high groove fast. It was Koehler spinning and collecting Brent Voeltz, Justin Claussen, Jesse Bryan, Swearingen, Darrel Hazelton, and Karl Kolek. Hazelton and Kolek both endured heavy damage and were eliminated from the event.
The race restarted the final time as Schwartz drove to the checkers undaunted and Halopka was able to take over second place. Watkins finished third and Swearingen fourth as Kyle Johnson had a nice run from his 12th starting position to round out the top five.
The Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock feature saw Karl Genett take the early lead from his pole position as Michael Knudtson stayed glued to his rear bumper. Cody Kummer worked the cushion from his outside front row starting position but on lap four, it was Knudtson slipping into the lead. A lone caution flew for Jacob Hessler not being able to clear the track after a break down which reset the field. One again, Knudtson lead on the restart and although he showed smoke for several laps, he drove home to the victory. Kummer finished a solid second, followed by Kyle and then Karl Genett. Travis Hazelton finished in fifth.
The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks had a major rollover in its heat action as Nicholas Hazelton flipped several times and although he was uninjured, he was unable to continue on the night. The feature was led early by Jeremy Dahl as Kent Harmon spun but the race remained under green and he dropped from near the front to last. Before another lap was scored, James Thur drew the caution and Harmon caught a break and restarted in third, the position he was running the last scored lap. On the restart, Dustin Doughty powered to the point as Harmon took second from Dahl. Brett Myers drove to fourth and battled for third as Doughty drove away from the field to the checkered flag. With two laps remaining, Myers took over third but the gap to second finishing Harmon had grown too large. Cody Tisdale also overtook Dahl late in the going. It was Cole Varsho being scored in fifth after Dahl failed a postrace inspection.
The WAYY 790 Hornets saw a rollover of their own as Dean Butler was uninjured after he flipped several times in turn three in his heat action. It was Armond Love on the pole flanked by Derek Krumrie at feature time. Love drove to the lead at the drop of the green as Derrick Johnson and William Voelz followed behind. Love was strong; however, Johnson was better through turn two and pulled even for the lead. Voeltz decided it was a good time to make it a three wide battle for the point as they approached lapped traffic. Love made contact with Jason Holte as he was putting him a lap down. Holte spun, drawing the caution and Love was forced to the work area and restarted 12th in a green, white, checkered showdown for the win. It was Johnson inheriting the lead, which he never relinquished over the last two laps. Voeltz finished second, followed by Bradley York and Jordan Langer. Love blasted from the rear on the restart to move to fifth in the final two circuits.
