Hunter Marriott Gets The Big Check At Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway
on June 25, 2016 at 2:52 pmOshkosh, June 24- The Cheesehead Triple Crown entered night number 2 for the “Battle at the Zone” Friday night at the Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway, with a total field of 163 cars including 74 IMCA Modifieds, 30 IMCA Stock Cars, 40 IMCA Sport Mods and 19 Street stocks. There was a total of 36 races run, turning 395 laps on a smooth, pretty much dust free track before all the feature hardware was handed out for the night.
The IMCA Modifieds ran a double set of heats, with consys to set their 24 car feature field. Steve Schneider and Hunter Marriott sat on the front row and Marriott grabbed the lead at the start and immediately started to open a lead on the field. Kelly Shyrock pulled behind Schneider in third with Brian Mullen, Thursday night Clash at the Creek winner, Benji LaCrosse , and Brian Drexler behind. The race was fast and clean with Marriott increasing his lead and plenty of tight racing behind.
The lone caution appeared on lap 25 for a spin and bunched the field on Marriott. The restart showed much the same as Marriott powered ahead once again, and cruised to the $5,000 payday. Schneider withstood heavy pressure from Shyrock over the final laps and claimed the runner up spot. There was plenty of hard racing in the field to the finish with Troy Jerovetz moving up to finish in the 4th spot. Weekly point leader, Marcus Yarie made his way from mid pack to finish 5th, Shawn Kilgore was 6th with Brian Mullen, Josh Long, Benji LaCrosse and Tom Berry rounding out the top 10.
The IMCA Stock Car headliner put 20 cars on the track with a lone caution on the first lap. Joe White took the lead on the restart with Travis Springstroh, David Horening, Chis Lowenhagen and Travis Van Straten behind. The front six cars remained bunched with passing hard to do. Van Straten was trying to weasel between the pack while Greg Wichamn and Kyle Frederick were moving from behind. After lap 10, Van Straten was finally able to start working through the lead pack and after a couple side by side laps with White, was able to pull into the lead and from there just race on his own to collect his second straight Cheeshead feature, winning at 141 on Thursday. The rest of the pack was tight to the finish line with White taking the runner up spot. Springstroh controlled third with Wichman, Frederich and Hoerning rounding out the top six.
An error in the IMCA Sport Mod feature lineup resulted in the field being set at 28 cars for the 20 lap event. The result turned out to be a non-stop feature run with all cars finishing the contest and no one lapped.
Kyle Raddant led the opening lap before Scott Besaw settled into the top spot settling tight to the inside of the track. The entire field remained close with Wyatt Block, Hunter Parsons, Jason Ebert, Jeff Steenbergen and Chris Budzban behind. There was a lot of hard driving with the field bunched. Besaw did not have an easy spot with everyone behind taking their shot either from behind or trying the outside. Colten Van Hierden and Jeff Schmuhl worked into the lead group with 5 laps left and made things real interesting. Besaw was able to withstand every challenge and captured his first ever Sport Mod feature flag. Parsons went from second to fourth over the last couple laps before surging ahead to claim the runner up spot at the finish. Ebert claimed third with Schmuhl, Van Hierden and Block rounding out the top six.
Clint Evans jumped from the pole to the lead in the Street Stock main with Trevor Van Straten, Adam Crapser, Dan Knaus, Jeff Jungwirth, Steve Ecker and Lexii Ashcraft behind. Ashcraft was on a mission and workind inside and outside lines to advance to the top spot on lap 9. A few mid race cautions kept the field bunched and thin final green appeared with 7 laps remaining. Ashcraft was setting the pace with Ecker, Jungwith and Knas bunbced tight behind. Steven Gawaresky joined the leaders with 5 laps left and the scramble was on. At the finish line, Ashcraft claimed her first ever SpeedZone feature victory with Gawaresky nipping Jungwith for second. Ecker settled for fourth with Knaus fifth, Alex Crapser came from the rear of the field after an opening lap mix up to round out the top six.
A full regular program returns to the SpeedZone next Friday night with racing at 7 PM.
