Shawano,WI,5/21/16—Mother nature was a race fan this week as amazing weather greeted race fans who took in fantastic races at the historic half-mile Shawano Speedway. “The Blaze” Doug Blashe, a veteran of thirty plus years behind the wheel, scored his first win of the season in the Late Model feature. While Marcus Yarie and Travis VanStraten each won their third feature of the season. Additionally, Lucas Lamberies and Grant Kastning both secured their second features of the year. Nothing came easy for any of the winners as they all had to battle for hard fought victories.
Jeff Curtin and Doug Blashe raced side by side for the first two laps of the Late Model feature with Curtin leading both laps. Lap three though saw Blashe pull ahead of Curtin for the lead. Tom Naeyaert quickly began to apply pressure to Curtin for the second spot. Naeyaert got passed Curtin on lap six. With Blashe, Naeyaert, and Curtin running in the top three, Brett Swedberg went to work utilizing the high groove on the track. Swedberg passed both Troy Springborn and Derek Jahnke to move up to fourth. On lap nineteen Swedberg passed Curtin to move into third. Blashe continued to stay about ten car lengths ahead of Naeyaert, while Swedberg began to close the gap on Naeyaert. Blashe went on to win the feature race ahead of Naeyaert. A hard charging Swedberg finished third right behind Naeyaert. Curtin and Springborn completed the top five in a race that ran twenty-five laps without a caution.
In IMCA Modified action Tyler Wilson grabbed the lead on the opening lap, but was quickly pressured by Joel Seegert. The lead duo raced nose to tail lap after lap. Seegert tried both high and low to find a way by Wilson. As the lead duo duked it out, Marcus Yarie began to work his way to the front after starting deep in the field. Yarie passed Kevin Feck for third on lap eight. On lap nine it became a three car battle for the lead. Wilson continued to lead with Seegert and Yarie side by side right on Wilson’s bumper. Those three continued to spar like prize fighters lap after lap with Wilson somehow able to hold the lead yet. Yarie finally found an advantage on lap fifteen making a pass up high in turns one and two to take the lead. Yarie led the rest of the way for the win. Wilson and Seegert continued to battle for second. Seegert made a last lap pass to finish second. Wilson, Feck, and Chucky Forstner rounded out the top five in a race that ran twenty caution free laps.
The IMCA Stock Car feature continued the green to checkered caution free trend. Chris Loewenhagen snagged the lead on lap one in front of BJ Giese. Loewenhagen began to receive pressure from Kyle Frederick on lap three. On lap five Rod Snellenberger crashed the lead party moving into third. Frederick and Snellenberger passed Loewenhagen on lap six. Lap eight saw Snellenberger sneak past for Frederick for the lead, while Travis VanStraten made his first appearance in the top three. Snellenberger, Frederick, and VanStraten then began a three car tussle for first. VanStraten was eventually able to make his way to the lead on lap twelve with an outside pass on Snellenberger. VanStraten held the point position the rest of the way, but it was not easy as Snellenberger and Frederick stayed right on him. VanStraten crossed the line first with Snellenberger, Frederick, Gary Kasperek, and Dan Michonski finishing second through fifth.
Karah Taycher secured the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Sport Mod feature while Brekken Kleinschmidt settled into second. Kleinschmidt maintained the second position until Lucas Lamberies grabbed the second spot on lap five. Taycher could only fend off Lamberies through lap five though as Lamberies used an inside pass to take the lead over. Taycher continued to chase Lamberies until lap twelve when Jordan Barkholtz hustled his way into the second position. Much to the chagrin of Barkholtz, Lamberies went on to victory lane. Barkholtz had to settle for second ahead of Jason Jach, Brekken Kleinschmidt, and Jeff Schmul in the top five.
Dylan Pingel grabbed the lead on lap one of the Mighty Four feature. Pingel would hold the lead for one lap before giving way to Dustin Urban. Urban’s lead would last for one lap before Josh Slewinski took over on lap three. Slewinski looked to have the car to beat as he began to pull away from the rest of the field. Fourteenth place starter Hollie Welch moved up to second on lap seven and it looked that she would have something for Slewinski. The best was yet to come though as Grant Kastning passed Welch for second on lap eight and began to stalk Slewinski for the lead. Kastning set a course for Slewinski and quickly reeled him in. Kastning moved inside of Slewinski on lap eleven and made the pass for the lead. Kastning went on to win, with Slewinski, Welch, Dalton Nelson, and Lucas Hacker rounding out the top five. The race was run without a caution.
