Summer of ‘16 at ABC Raceway to include Family Fun, Busy Slate
on April 21, 2016 at 4:23 amAshland, WI — The staff of the award-winning ABC Raceway is ready to offer its fans and drivers a fun-filled, active summer of racing in 2016.
An ambitious 16-event schedule is planned for this summer, packed with a variety of promotions and events geared toward families, casual race fans and die-hard “motorheads.”
The facility, which will host its 52nd consecutive season of stock car racing action under the direction of the all-volunteer Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association at the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval located just south of Ashland, will once again operate under the sanction of the WISSOTA Promoters Association. Action will include five-division race events on Saturday nights from mid-May through the end of August before capping off the season with the Red Clay Classic invitational.
Those divisions will include WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds, and the entry-level Pure Stock division also becomes a WISSOTA division at ABC this season. The Raceway’s own Six-Cylinder division will be on hand as well.
For 2016 the Raceway will be offering a Kids’ Club for the younger race fans, offering a variety of special activities, along with gifts and prizes, for the youngsters.
Also this summer, the track will partner with a number of local businesses and organizations for a variety of promotions sprinkled throughout the schedule. Fans are encouraged to watch the track’s website, follow local media sources, and patronize the track’s many sponsors for details.
The season kicks off with the annual car show and swap meet on Saturday, April 30, from 10 am-2 pm at FastLane Motorsports & Custom Powdercoating, on US Highway 2 at the east end of Ashland. Fans will be able to get an up-close look at several of the race cars that will be competing at the ABC Raceway on Saturday nights this summer, and local classic car and hot rod owners are welcome to show off their prized vehicles on front of FastLane’s shop.
“WBSZ Race Night” will air live from 10 am-noon from the car show on 93.3 FM as well as online at www.wbszfm.com.
The May portion of the season is slated to begin on the 14th, and after night two of the season on the 21st, a special night honoring the men and women who have bravely served our country will take place on May 28, with free admission to members of the Armed Forces showing a military ID on that night.
The very popular “Meet the Drivers” night for the younger fans kicks off the month of June on the 4th, followed by the “Midwest Mod Madness” event – the first of five special nights celebrating the track’s weekly race divisions – on the 11th. A buy-one-get-one-free adult admission ticket deal will be offered on June 18, and the “Summer Sizzler” for the Sixes will close out the first half of the season on the 25th.
After a night off on July 2, the schedule really gets busy, starting with kids’ bike races on the 9th. The three-race, three-night, three-track Northland Super Stock Series will make its middle stop at Ashland on the 16th, and after the WISSOTA Race of Champions qualifiers on the 23rd the track will host its “Modified Mayhem” event on July 30.
The track will offer up a summer party to racers and fans on August 6, and on the 13th it will induct its Class of 2016 into the ABC Raceway Hall of Fame. The 13th annual “Pure Excitement 25” for the Pure Stockers is set for the 20th, and the regular season ends with Championship Saturday Night on August 27.
The crown jewel of the racing invitational season in the Northland – the 41st Red Clay Classic – will be held on Friday andSaturday, September 31-October 1, and will feature upwards of 200 racers from four states and Canada competing for a total purse in excess of $85,000.
The ABC Raceway is proud to welcome Legendary Waters Resort & Casino of Red Cliff and Zar’s Banquet Hall of Ashland to its increasing list of generous supporters. During the regular season, a “hot laps” practice session begins each night at 6:15 pm, while the racing action starts at 7. For all regular-season race nights, adult tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.
