1st Annual Randy Buss Ice Breaker Classic
on April 17, 2016 at 2:27 pmMenomonie, Wisconsin (April 15, 2016) the Red Cedar Speedway presented the 1st Annual Randy Buss Ice Breaker Classic sponsored by T & T Construction, One Main Financial, and Accurate Construction. The WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models were all in action battling for increased payout at the window. Randy Buss was an instrumental figure in multiple aspects at the Red Cedar Speedway beginning as a child when his parents were very involved at the track. Randy was a car owner, pit man, volunteer, and board member throughout his adult lifetime. He also was a board member for WISSOTA itself and fought hard for the racers. He was inducted into the Red Cedar Speedway Hall of Fame in 2014, and passed away from cancer in 2015. His family is still involved greatly at the track. I believe he would be humbled and speechless in reference to his name gracing the opening event. Feature winners included Darrell Nelson, Ashley Anderson, Curt Meyers, and Nick Koehler.
The T.L. Sinz Plumbing Late Model heats were won by Brad Seng and Scott Gilberts as Seng and late model rookie Jesse Glenz paced the filed to green in the feature. The inside line, led by Grand Forks, North Dakoda’s Seng, move out front as Darrell Nelson and Rick Hanestad followed. Soon, Nelson moved to the higher groove and battled side by side for the point. Two laps later, he owned first and drove off into the night to a margin of nearly a half lap at the checkered flag. Seng ran alone and unchallenged for second as Hanestad finished third over Scott Gilberts and fifth place John Kaanta.
The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds saw Matt Leer and Cory Mahder win heats as Ross Prochnow and David Baxter led the action to the green flag. The modifieds had a tough time getting going as in the first corners Kevin Adams lost control, spun, and collected Cory Mahder, Tim Johnson, Luke Schilling, and Bryan Hessler. Adams’ car was heavily damaged and he was the only driver unable to continue. The second attempt of the start was again aborted due to a caution which found Mahder the victim and leaving the track. Try three found Baxter spinning in turn four eliminating him for the night. The fourth time saw the yellow fly for Brent Prochnow as he came to a stop on the racing surface. He was able to go to the work area and return in the rear. The fifth attempt to get lap one in the books was successful and saw Matt Leer move to the point.
Dave Cain used the lower line to challenge for first and as he wrestled away the lead, the yellow flew as Brent Prochnow once again came to a stop, ending his night. The restart saw Leer regaining his position and Mike Anderson in third from his eleventh place starting position; however, Anderson had lost his brakes. On the restart it was Ashley Anderson who overtook all three and moved out front. The yellow flew for the final time on lap 14 as Hessler came to a stop in turn three. Ashley Anderson drove unchallenged to the checkered flag followed home by Leer, Cain, Ross Prochnow, and Corey Bruggeman.
The Johnson Motors Super Stocks heats were won by 2015 National Champion Curt Myers and Tommy Richards as 2015’s runner up Tim Johnson and third place Richards held the front row. An amazing start saw Johnson shoot to the lead as Ben Hillman joined the battle and Richards made a bold move to claim the point. Hillman spun in turn three, drawing the caution and resetting the field. After one failed attempt to restart, they were able to get things rolling as Richards shot to the lead. However, Myers was going to have nothing to do with a close race as he overtook second, classed on the leader, and overtook Richards on the low side. Myers drove away from the pack to near a half lap lead.
On lap 13, Hillman came to the stop on the backstretch. Once again, on the restart, Myers left the others behind as Richards began to struggle. Johnson moved to second as a fast Nick Oreskovich overtook third and Jesse Redetzke battled on the outside in fourth. A Gunnar Watkins spin drew the yellow after Redetzke had overtaken third. On the restart, another two car incident slowed the pace again with four laps remaining. Myers quickly blasted out front and drove to the win impressively over Johnson. Oreskovich regained third over Redetzke and Bart Steffen was scored in fifth.
The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds saw three heats won by Travis Anderson, Michael Truscott, and Curt Myers. The feature was lead to green by Nick Koehler and Truscott and it was Koehler to the lead, and after surviving five cautions, he led every lap to the checkers. Initially, Southworth and Truscott fought side by side for runner up as Truscott claimed the spot on the high side. David Swearingen was the first yellow as he came to a stop on the track. The restart saw a crash in one and two as Southworth was eliminated when he was spun by Myers and struck by Clark Swartz who had nowhere to go.
The race returned to green bringing a good race for second between Truscott and Travis Anderson. A spinning Truscott collected the strong cars of Anderson and Shane Halopka, eliminating all three. On the restart, Karl Kolek spun, slowing the pace. Back under green, Curt Myers, who had raced from the rear of the field to fourth spun drawing the caution flag. Going green, Koehler continued unchallenged and when coming to the white flag, Matt Klukas spun directly in front of the leader. The green, white, checkered finish saw Koehler the winner over Dan Wheeler, Schwartz, Tyler Kitner, and Karl Kolek.
The Red Cedar Speedway will return to racing on April 22, 2016 featuring Kid’s Club Night presented by Sport Rider. The WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models, along with the Red Cedar Speedway Pure Stocks and Hornets will all be in action.
