The Richards’ Own the Showdown

Jim Falls, Wisconsin (September 07, 2015) Monday, Labor Day, September 07 the River Country Coop sponsored the Jim Town Showdown Labor Day Special. All six classes of cars with the EVS Hornets, EVS Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds were in action. The weather finally cooperated after flooding earlier in the week and rain canceled the first night of action, the Eagle Valley Speedway was able to present the last night of racing for the 2015 season and incorporated the Show Down with the Season Championship. Heats were lined up by season long points and the features were set by the finishing order of the heats.

Feature winners included Dave Baxter, Tommy Richards, Nick Koehler, Danny Richards, George Richards, and Chad Prissel.
The Modified heat was won by Mike Anderson as he and Dave Baxter sat on the front row of the feature. Baxter used his outside starting position to drive to the high side and the lead. Anderson set chase as the two drove away from the remaining field. A spinning Gary Baxter at the halfway point grouped the cars together and on the restart Dave Baxter returned to the high line in the lead. However, Anderson pounded the low groove and remained in Baxter’s shadow the entire remaining distance. Anderson strained to pull just short of even at the white flag and made one last effort at stealing the win but Baxter was too fast. The impressive Modified rookie, Nick Koehler finished third ahead of Matt Lear and Steve Hallquist.
Tommy Richards and Mike Anderson were the heat winners in the Super Stocks as Richards drove to the lead off the front row and Anderson began to chase for the point. It was Dan Nissalke overtaking Anderson for second and a single caution for a spinning Terry Kroening reset the field at the hallway point. Richards was unchallenged, driving to his 26th feature win in 2015 as all three brothers swept their respective classes on the night. Nissalke beat Anderson as the two raced nose to tail the remaining distance well ahead of Kevin Burdick and Travis Hallquist in fifth.
The Midwest Modified heats were won by Grant Southworth, Nick Koehler, and Robbie Johnson as the trio started the feature one through three. Southworth took the initial lead but Koehler moved to the upper groove and powered past to the point. The two drove in tandem away from the remaining field dicing through lapped traffic, including Chris Johnson who ran faster than Mike Baker ever did, all the way to the checkered flag. Behind them, seventh starting Shane Halopka eventually made his way to third but was a half lap behind the leaders at the finish. Jason Richardson and Mark Thomas completed the top five.
The Street Stocks heats were won by Danny Richards and Ron Hanestad as Richards drove to the lead and on to the checkers unchallenged. Nate Hauge tried to close on the leader early but wasn’t able to gain ground. A spinning Heidi Karshbaum reset the field giving everyone a chance at Richards, but he was too tough all night long. Hauge and Travis Hazelton battled for second as Adam Soltis closed to join them. Contact between the hard charging Dalton Hazelton and Soltis saw Soltis lose track position but shortly thereafter, Hazelton spun in between turns three and four and Soltis used the restart to close on Travis Hazelton and overtake the spot. Travis followed Soltis to the finish in third as Mike Knudtson and Hauge rounded out the top five.
The Pure Stock heats were won by George Richards and Nicholas Hazelton as Richards bested the two off the front row for the lead. Richards began a dominating run as Pat Smith tried to race him down. On the front stretch, something broke on the Smith car and as he was trying to clear the track, he hit a tractor tire protecting a light pole and began to climb the pole. He was unhurt as the safety equipment all did its job but his night was over. On the restart, it was again Richards as Hazelton raced in second and was challenged for the position by Cody Tisdale and his newly purchased car. James Thur drew the last caution of the event resetting the field. Richards drove away from the crowd and on to a convincing win. Behind him, an impressive Tisdale survived a challenge for second by a hard charging CJ Wagner. Dustin Holub drove from 13th to finish fourth ahead of twelfth starting Lucas Kallenbach in fifth.
The Hornet heats were won by Dan Prissel, Chad Prissel, and Dean Butler as the Prissel brothers held the front row of the feature. Chad immediately drove to the lead as Dan followed. Behind them, Dean Butler and Sean Svee raced side by side for third. Suddenly Svee, having appeared to suffer a flat front tire, veered into the back stretch wall. The restart saw Chad Prissel continue to lead, but Bob Seidler took over second. One lap later, Seidler lost a wheel and tire and he too found the backstretch wall. Again, Chad Prissel led on the restart but this time, his brother had something for him. The two drove several laps side by side before Chad secured the point and drove to the checkers. Dan Prissel finished a strong second over Dean Butler who had a fine run in third. It was Trevor Reding and Jason Bauer closing out the top five.
Just for my own sake of mind, correcting a previous correction, Dan Prissel was the 2015 track points champion in the Hornets. My apologies to the Prissel family for the mistake!
The Eagle Valley Speedway closed out its season with tonight’s action. It will return to racing in April 2016. Janis and Jerry Weigel, along with the entire Eagle Valley Speedway crew thank all the drivers, pit crews, and fans for making the 2015 season a success. Thanks also go out to the fine sponsors each week, including Oium Blacktop and Kelly Oium Well Drilling and Pump Service who gave away a bicycle to one boy and one girl every racing night.
