Roll Overs at Eagle River Speedway are usually something no one expects, but on Friday Night, roll-overs were planned! It is also expected that the legendary track will welcome racers from all over the Midwest, but it is not expected that they will make the trip…and go home a Feature Winner.
After getting rained out the previous two attempts, the Roll Over Contest took place. Rolling away with $150.00 and the Roll Over Championship was Jonathon Brit in a Scharfs Automotive sponsored car. Taking a second was John Kallas. John Eckert of Eagle River had 4 other cars in the competition.
One of the top WISSOTA Midwest Modified Drivers in the National Points standings, Shane Halopka of Greenwood made the long trip to Eagle River Speedway worthwhile. Halopka edged out the Eagle River Speedway Midwest Modified Point Champion for the last 3 years, Jesse Aho of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in both the Feature and the Heat Race.

Aho opened the night with a special lap around the track in Bob Kleinschmidt’s ‘0’ car. Kleinschmidt lost his battle with cancer earlier in the week. To honor the 30+ year driver, a special Bobby-0 SPIRIT Award will be handed out every year. The winner of the 1st Bobby-0 SPIRIT Award will be announced at this coming Friday Night’s races.
The 5 Finalists for that award is the late Mark Glembin, along with Rhinelander’s Cory Allen, Tomahawk’s CJ Hedges, Jr., Eagle River’s Ken Valeria, and Ontonagon, Michigan’s, Larry Grieg.
Aho looks to take home his 4th Consecutive Midwest Modified Point Chamoionship. Aho has a 47 point lead over Eagle River’s Tadd Schoonover with one point race remaining. Aho totaled his 25 car a month ago and has been racing Kleinschmidt’s ‘0’ car since the accident.
“I want to bring home this points championship In the ‘0’ car for Bob,” commented Aho.
Making his first trip to the Eagle River Speedway Tri-Oval was Rice Lake, Wisconsin’s, Jim Randall. Just as Halopka edged out the defending and current class leader in the Midwest Modified, Randall did the same in the WISSOTA Street Stock Class by holding off Tomahawk’s Nate Langberg.
Langberg is in close race for the WISSOTA Street Stock Points Championship with Eagle River’s Ryan Glembin. Langberg leads Glembin by 15 points going into the final Points Race this coming Friday Night.
The Pure Stock class had 17 cars in the Feature. Working his way through ‘traffic’ to win the Feature was Tomahawk’s CJ Hedges, Jr. Hedges looks to take home the Class Championship with a 35 point lead over Eagle River’s Don Scharf. Scharf has been the ‘runner-up’ in this class the last 2 years. However it was not Scharf that Hedges had to hold off, but Tomahawk’s Michael Brown and Eagle River’s, Jake Ison.
“One would have expected CJ (Hedges) to battle it out with (Jake) Ison, or even David (Blackberg), Don (Scharf), but with (Michael) Brown only running here one other time this year, who would have expected CJ to battle it out with Brown,” commented Kevin Dawson of Eagle River Speedway.
Blackberg, Ison, and Brown won the Pure Stock Heat races to add validity to Dawson’s remarks.
It was a ‘Son-Father” duo in the Micro Sprint 600 Feature. Jake Reif defeated his father Jerry in the Feature. Jerry did beat his son, Jake, in the previous Heat Race. Eagle River’s 13 year old sensation, Ty Springer already has the Micro Sprint Class Championship clinched.
Ty’s younger sister, Tommi Jo won both the Junior Sprint Feature and Heat. Just like her older brother, Tommi-Jo has the Junior Sprint Point Championship wrapped up for the year.
The Final Points race of the season will take place this coming Friday Night. However the popular Northern Wisconsin track will hold a special race on Friday Night, September 11th. Hot laps will begin at 7:00 pm CT, with racing to begin at 7:30 pm CT.
