Ashland, WI — The ABC Raceway will be right in the middle of a special weekend for WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds when it opens the gates for stock car racing action on Saturday night.
In a program to be presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsmen’s Club, as many as 30 or more Mid-Mods could be in action for the second night of the first-ever AmsOil Midwest Modified Summer Nationals, a three-night, four-track series that will pay out over $40,000 during the weekend.
After Friday night’s series opener in Superior, drivers will have their choice of racing at either ABC or in Hibbing, MN, on Saturday before converging on Proctor, MN, for a $5,000-to-win finale. In Ashland on Saturday, the Mid-Mods will be racing for $600 to win in their feature.

But while that race will be the spotlight event of the night, it’s just one in a full slate of action scheduled. Besides the full complement of racers in the track’s five regular weekly divisions – WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds and Super Stocks in addition to the Mid-Mods, plus the track’s own Six-Cylinders and Pure Stocks – the Northern Vintage Stockcar Racers group will make its annual visit to the northern Wisconsin red-clay oval.
The club brings as many as 15-18 restored “throwback” racers to compete and offer a popular glimpse of racing from days gone by.
With only three race nights remaining in the regular season, all five points championships are still very much up for grabs. Al Uotinen of Superior leads the Modifieds, but the top four are within just 12 points. In the Supers, Sarona’s Shane Kisling took over the top spot after last weekend’s show, but again only 13 points separate the top four.
Paul Suzik of Ironwood, MI, tops the Mid-Mod standings, with the next three in the standings within 14 markers of him. And the battle in the Sixes, where Hayward’s Dale Coddington leads Tiffany Hudack of Ashland by just five, should go right down to the wire.
In the Pure Stocks, Ashland’s Matt Deragon holds a ten-point advantage – the most breathing room in any of the divisions.
During intermission of the program the Sportsmen’s Club will hold its annual drawing, with valuable prizes and cash to be handed out. Tickets will be available at the track right up until the end of the heat races.
Hot laps begin at 6:15 pm, followed by racing at 7. Adult tickets are just $10, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. “Z-93 Race Night” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, as well as stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
