Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge!
on July 26, 2015 at 1:43 pmMenomonie, Wisconsin (July 23, 2015) the Red Cedar Speedway was in action on Thursday, July 23, 2015, for the Dunn County Fair as Pistol Pete’s Custom Cycles presented the UMSS Traditional Sprints with Pure Stocks and Hornets. In addition, the Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge which paid $500 to the winner answered the question of which class was faster! Feature winners included Rick Kobs, Jesse Bryan, and Jeremy Johnson. It was Bryan taking the Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge as the top three finishers were all Pure Stocks.
The UMSS Traditional Sprints took to the track for two heats, two challenge heats, and their feature. The heats were won by Deer Park, Wisconsin’s Rick Kobs and Stacy, Minnesota’s Mike Mueller. Kobs came from last to win the first challenge heat and Prior Lake, Minnesota’s Neal Matuska won the second. The feature race pitted the two challenge winners on the front row as Kobs took the lead on the green and led all but one of the 25 laps to the checkers. It wasn’t necessarily and easy feat; however, as Chase Viebrock closed on him and appeared poised to steal the show. As the leaders were approaching lapped traffic, Elk Mound, Wisconsin’s Blake Anderson appeared to lose a motor. Kobs was able to squeeze by but Viebrock made contact with the leader and spun in the fluids on the track. Unlike WISOTTA rules which would have placed Viebrock back in the second position for the restart because the caution was not his fault, he was relegated to the rear of the field. Under UMSS rules, if a car comes to a stop on the track, they go to the rear.
On the restart, Wyoming, Minnesota’s Rob Caho, Jr. challenged for the lead and led a lap, but Kobs proved too strong. Kobs quickly regained the position and drove the remaining distance to the victory as Caho Jr. remained close. The two stretched their lead over third finishing Jimmy Kuba of Byron, Minnesota, and fourth place James Giossi of New Richmond, Wisconsin. Viebrock made an impressive comeback from the rear to finish fifth.
The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks heat winners were Jesse Bryan and Kent Harmon as the two held the front row of the feature and Bryan went on for a triple sweep of the evening. At the drop of the green, Bryan blasted into the lead and drove into the night as he piloted the 21b to a commanding win. There were races for position as Jason Havel worked on Harmon for second and Dustin Doughty and George Richards raced for fourth. Harmon began to fade and the eventual top five finishers were Bryan, Hovel, Richards, Doughty, and Myers. It was Harmon as the first man out for the Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge finishing sixth.
The Value Implement Hornets heats were won by Jeremy Johnson, Leslie Jackson, and Kevin Kadinger as the feature lined up straight up pitting Jeremy Johnson and Leslie Jackson on the front row. It was Jackson taking the early lead but a spinning Dean Butler drew the caution. On the restart Jackson again took the point, but one lap later, Johnson used the high line to take the position and never glance back. William Voeltz drove under Jackson for second, only to find her drive back underneath him a lap later. The yellow flew again, as for the third time in the night, having happened in hot laps and in his heat, Alex Waldera lost a wheel. His struggles ended his night and shortly after the restart, the fourth place Jesse Tripp dropped out of contention. It was Johnson winning over Jackson, Voeltz, Scott Hayden, and Derrick Johnson as the top five qualified for the Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge set for later in the evening. Tenth starting Bradley York was the first non-qualifier in sixth. He would start; however as Derrick Johnson could not make the call.
A crowd favorite Pure Stock vs. Hornet Challenge was held as the top five finishers from the night’s feature redrew for starting position in a battle for $500 to the winner. The Pure Stocks enjoyed a good draw as the first three starter were all from their class. Dustin Doughty and Jessy Bryan held the front row as George Richards and William Voeltz, the highest starting Hornet followed them to green in row two. Bryan drove to the immediate lead as all five Pure Stocks moved into the top five. The remaining five Hornets raced in a swarm behind them.
With nine laps in, Brett Myers made a bold move to overtake third, but spun and brought out the caution. He left the raceway and Doughty retired from the race under yellow. On the restart, the action began as the Hornets could out accelerate the much larger Pure Stocks. Jeremy Johnson raced to third and Voeltz to fourth before Jason Hovel spun and Scott Hayden was sent to the rear of the field for the restart.
As the race resumed, Bryan moved back to the lead as Richards and Hovel battled for second. It was Jeremy Johnson who brought the crowd to his feet as he continually blasted the corners and tried in vain to sneak underneath the two coming off the turns. Bryan went on for the big payday as Richards ran a close second. Hovel finished third over Johnson who proved he can definitely wheel a car as he challenged the big brothers picking up a $100 check for the highest finishing Hornet. Leslie Jackson finished fifth in a fine run.
