On a Night for Pink Yellows Rule
on July 21, 2015 at 7:30 amMenomonie, Wisconsin (June 19, 2015) the Red Cedar Speedway presented “3-day at the Races” benefitting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. A great amount of funds were raised for an excellent cause, including one fan donating the entire 50/50 pot back to the effort. Over $600 in that one donation added to an impressive total! The WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models, along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and Value Implement Hornets were on tap. One week after an amazing night of racing action, the event was full of controversy and very strange events; however, feature winners included AJ Diemel, Jesse Glenz, Jason Forehand, Nick Koehler, Ron Hanestad, Kent Harmon, and Sean Svee.
The T.L. Sinz Plumbing Late Model finale was one of the few normal features of the night as the track seemed to lock down and it ran cover to cover without a caution for the entire advertised distance. The heats were won by Rick Hanestad and AJ Diemel as Buddy Hanestad and Todd Green paced the field to the start. Fifth starting Rick Hanestad cruised to the front as Buddy Hanestad settled in behind him. AJ Diemel closed and overtook the Hanestad tandem and took control of the race on lap two. Mike Prochnow was able to wrestle third from Buddy Hanestad as they each ran comfortably in their own zone the remainder of the race. Diemel led them to the checkers over Rick Hanestad, Prochnow, the rookie Buddy Hanestad, as Joel Collins finished fifth. The most impressive run was that of Buddy Hanestad as he held his own against some of the best local talent available, securing his first top five finish of his young WISSOTA racing career.
One week after the most amazing race in recent memory, the Tim’s Automotive Modifieds feature was scarred by controversy and angry competitors and fans alike. The heats were won by Kerry Halopka and Mike Anderson as Jay Richardson and Jordan Hessler held the front row. Richardson immediately took the lead as third starting Steve Hallquist and sixth starting Mike Anderson charged into the chase. A spinning Cory Williams brought out the caution and he went to the pits aggressively. As the field was restarted, a Super Stock was pushed from the infield onto the backstretch by a wrecker as the field came bearing down upon them. The yellow flew, and fortunately for all, a very scary situation caused nothing more than another caution. On the restart attempt, the field bunched up and Cody Cimfl spun. Another restart was attempted as the second row of Mike Anderson and Hallquist were run into from behind. Anderson’s car turned sideways stacking the field as Jesse Glenz took the opportunity and jumped to the outside and drove by all to the lead. The restart was not aborted as Glenz went on to lead the remaining laps over Richardson. Anderson recovered to finish third as Hallquist and Ashley Anderson finished in the top five in what was a six lap feature. Tempers flared post-race in addition to angry competitors voicing their concerns with track officials.
Two Johnson Motors Super Stocks heats were won by Eric Olson and Bart Steffen. In the feature, Tommy Richards and Rick Hallquist paced the field as Richards took early control. Eighth starting Jason Forehand drove to second in two laps and on lap three, he powered into the lead. The first of several yellows flew for a spinning Derek Baskin. A stacked up restart found Gunnar Watkins shuffled out and he came to a stop on the racing surface. With seven laps in, Mike Anderson spun coming off turn four and on the restart, Tommy Richards chose the outside of row two and drove into the lead. The yellow flew again and Forehand returned to the point and held off Richards on the next start. Derrick Baskin spun again to bring out the last caution of the event and he was sent to the pits. In a strange, first for this writer, green checkered restart, the green flag and white flag were shown simultaneously. A one lap dash to the finish found Forehand in control followed by Richards, Olson, Jesse Redetzke, and Steffen. Unaware the drastically shortened race was completed, drivers continued to remain under power after the checkered flag creating a frightening situation; fortunately, the yellow light was displayed to slow their actions.
The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds heat winners Travis Anderson and Nick Koehler also graced the front row of the feature as Koehler put his brand new race car in the lead early. However, a spin on the first lap involving Michael Truscott and Shane Halopka drew the first of seven yellow flags and sent Halopka to the back of the field. The start again found Koehler in a familiar position as he drove to the lead followed by Anderson and Dave Shackleton. A spinning Josh Hessler drew the caution as he was narrowly missed by several drivers. The restart was aborted as Kyle Johnson looped it in turn four. The race restarted but was soon stopped as Hessler’s second caution of the night sent him pit side. The restart found Johnson in the wall but continuing as Ben Shultz and Jake Hanson spun with Shultz being sent to the tail. The restart again saw Johnson spinning with Brent Voeltz as Johnson was sent to the pits on the two caution rule. A green, white, checkered restart was called as Koehler continued to dominate at the white flag. Another caution flew as the white flag was thrown and the race was completed under yellow. Koehler was strong in his new car and was followed home by Anderson and Truscott who had battled for position for the entire five laps of green flag racing. Jake Smith and Dave Shackleton rounded out the top five.
Adam Soltis and Sam Fankhauser won the two Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock heats as Don Cook and Danny Richards owned the front row of the feature. One the start, Fankhauser and Richards made contact in turn three as Richards spun collecting Dalton Hazelton and Richards was sent to the rear of the field. A second attempt at a start found Fankhauser and Soltis coming together in the same spot as the previous yellow with Soltis spinning. Fankhauser survived another caution as Soltis was sent to the rear. On the third start attempt, the cars went four wide as Hunter VanGilder drove to the point. Seventh starting Ron Hanestad moved to the high line and drove to second, closed on the leader, and soon took the point. Eighth starting returning driver Kori Richter showed he will be a force to reckon with as he drove to third and was involved in a battle for position with a hard charging Richards. Hanestad went on to win in a controlling manner as VanGilder, Richter, Richards, and Soltis finished in the top five.
The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stock heat winner was Jason Havel as Jake Barta and Brett Myers filled out the front row of the feature; however, it was fourth starting Ken Harmon who found the point early and often. A yellow flag bunched the field but Harmon continued to lead as Hovel closed to challenge. Myers found speed midrace and he too closed on the leaders. With two laps remaining, Hovel attempted to make the pass for the lead in the high lane but pushed up the track and Harmon maintained control as Myers slipped into second. Harmon drove on to the win as Hovel recovered and won a close battle for second over Myers. Mike Grover followed them home and Cody Tisdale finished fifth.
The Value Implement Hornets heats were won by William Voeltz and Jeremy Johnson as Voeltz and Sean Svee paced the feature. The night’s craziness began immediately as fourth starting Johnson blasted to the lead, but an early caution reset the field. On the second start attempt, Johnson completed the same move and led down the backstretch. Voeltz made contact with Johnson going into turn three and Johnson was sent up into the wall drawing another yellow flag and ending his night. Voeltz was relegated to the back of the field. On the third attempt for a start, Svee took advantage and drove out to the lead and eventual win, driving essentially unchallenged for the victory. Leslie Johnson ran fast in the low groove, driving to second. Voeltz recovered from his early trip to the back of the pack and finished third. Bradley York and Derrick Johnson filled out the top five.
