SpeedZone results, July 17

Oshkosh, July 17 – It was Christmas in July Friday night when racing returned to the Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway. Not only did Santa make a trip to make an early check of the naughty and nice list for this year, everyone in attendance received a gift with 132 cars running a very competitive program on the 1/3 mile clay oval.

The Outlaw Chassis Street Stocks opened the feature portion of the program. Jim Pollnow took off from the start and opened a lead on the field until the caution flew on lap 5. Chase Soloman, Lexii Ashcraft, Jesse Krahn, Frank Knaus were behind for the restart. The field stayed with Pollow this time and Ashcraft pulled into the lead for one lap before Knaus hooked up on the outside and found the top spot on lap 8.

A final caution flew on lap 11 with Mark Schultz, Steve Ecker, Ashcraft, Dan Knaus and Jeff Jungwirth now line up behind the leader.

Schultz took the inside line and Knaus was still hooked up on the outside as the duel for the lead started. Shultz inched ahead for a couple laps when Knaus made another push and retook the lead on lap 16. Ecker was running right behind the pair and found a gap between them, and slipped into the runner up spot. Ecker took the outside line and over the last three laps could pull ahead entering turn one but Schultz was stronger out of four to hold the lead at the line, which was the case picking up the white flag. Ecker again pulled ahead but was able to hold the position on the back chute and side by side into the turn three. Out of the turn, Ecker found the bite he needed and burst off the final turn to jump ahead of Schultz and collect his fifth feature win of the season. Schultz took the runner up spot with Frank Knaus taking third. Jungwirth, Steve Gawaresky and Jeff Wicinsky round out the top six.

Paul Holschuh set the pace for the opening 2 circuits of the Total Power Sales IMCA Stock Car main before Dion Wahl took charge, building a slight lead as the field sorted out behind. Justin Jacobsen broke out of the bunch first and took over the lead on lap 9, just before a caution slowed the pace one lap later. Point leader, Travis Van Straten, moved to the point after the restart, but could not break away. Jacobsen, Jerry Winkler, Joe White, Wahl and John Heinz stayed right behind with a final caution on lap 14 setting up a six lap dash.

Despite heavy pressure over the final laps, Van Straten was able to hold off the challengers to win his fifth feature of the season. Jacobsen took the runner up spot with Winkle taking a strong third place finish. White, Heinz and Wahl rounded out the top six.

The Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds were next with a full 24 car field on the grid. Rookie contender, Trevor Spaulding grabbed the lead at the start followed by fellow rookie driver, Konnor Wilinski, Adam Reed, John Schultz, Eric Scribner and Mike Wedelstadt. Wedelstadt was on the move early and running the outside line. He moved up to take the lead on lap 6 and opened a lead on the field. Point leader, Marcus Yarie started the race in 11th and by lap 9 had taken the runner up spot and set out after Wedelstadt. A lap 10 caution made that chore easier as the field was bunched one more time. Wedelstadt continues to lead after the restart running the inside line with Yarie right behind.

A final caution set the field again on lap 13 and the lead battle continued for 2 more laps before Yarie suddenly pulled to the outside out of turn 2, and was able to pull off the pass for the lead on lap 15. Once in the lead, Yarie was able to pull away and collected his second feature win of the year. Wedelstadt took the runner up spot with Tim Lemirande coming from 18th to finish 3rd. Scribner took 4th. Eddie Muenster took 5th and Brian Drexler was the biggest mover, starting 21st after winning the consy, to round out the top six.

The IMCA Sport Mods took the track next with Brekken Kleinschmidt leading the way for the first lap before Brock Saunders took charge on lap 2. Lucas Lamberies, Chase Randerson, Ryan Besaw, Scott Howe and Colten Van Hierden were in line behind until a caution on lap 6.

Saunders continued to set the pace after the restart, but Van Hierden moved into the top spot one lap later and once in front, pulled away for the rest of the race to collect his 4th feature win of the season. The race for second was tight to the finish with Jeff Steenbergen able to sneak by Saunders on the final lap to take the runner up spot. Robby Thiel took fourth with Lamberies taking fifth. Jon Schultz rounded out the top six.

Derek Schrauth paced the opening lap of the Gold Star Racing Products Grand National main before Brian Vinney, Jr took control on lap 2 and proceeded to run away from the field until a lone caution appeared on lap 13. This put point leader, Kenny Richards right behind with Tim Doehling, Larry Richards, Schrauth and Brian Henry in.

Richards tried to take the top spot on the restart, but Vinney was hooked on the inside and held off the challenge and the opened another lead over the final laps to collect his first division feature win. Kenny Richards took second with Doehling in third. Larry Richards, Henry and Schrauth rounded out the top six.

Following an opening lap caution, the Ellington Mutual Insurance Dirt Devils clicked off a non- stop feature event to close the evening. Jordan Klemmer led the first three laps before point leader, Shaun Bangart pulled into the lead on lap 4, and once in charge, took off to hide from the rest of the field to take his 5th feature win of the season. There was plenty of close racing in the field behind. Kasey Gross ended a race long battle with John Stegner to take the runner up finish. Chris Maas did the same edging Joe Minks for 4th. Cod Pankow rounded out the top six.

Next Friday, July 24, the Outlaw IRA Sprint Cars will make their only appearance of the season at the SpeedZone. It will also be the second round of the IMCA Modified “King of the Ring” series which will pay the winner $1000. IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Sport Mods will also race next week.

A full six division program will return on Friday July 31, before the only Tuesday night race on August 4th to open the 2015 Winnebago County fair and present the LeRoy Dehn Memorial Walk of Fame night.
