Beaver Dam Raceway – Race Report – July 11th, 2015

It was NAPA night at the races and fans were treated to not one, not two, but three photo finishes.
First on the high banks were the feisty Choice Insurance legends cars. “The Dual Threat” Johnny Kringas jumped to the early lead at the drop of the green flag. As the field was bottled up battling for second, Kringas began to stretch his advantage through the middle portions of the race. Austin Wiese was the first one to break through traffic and give chase. Wiese was able to close on the back bumper but never could mount a serious attack for the lead. Kringas went on to win his first of the season at Beaver Dam but his second on the year in Wisconsin Dirt Legends action. Wiese finished 2nd, followed by point leader Mike Mueller, Ryan Mech, and Chris Flick. Earlier in the night Frankie Hoch, Jim Bucher, and Wiese picked up heat wins. With Cody Apfelbeck not in action, Mike Mueller extended his point lead considerably.

The Napa Auto Parts Street Stocks hit the track next. Russ Davison led at the drop of the green flag but was quickly challenged by “Racin” Jason White. While White was trying to run away and hide, Brandon Riedner, Scott Riedner, and Chad Hummelmeier were slicing through the field. Hummelmeier was the first to clear the cluster and set his sights on White. With only a handful of laps remaining, Hummelmeier and Brandon Riedner caught White and the battle to the end would have to be settled through some lap traffic. White already established on the cushion, Hummelmeier was forced to try the low lane. Unable to make his car stick down there, he then tried to go top to bottom and that was the NAPA Know How he needed to get along side of White. On the final lap, White and Hummelmeier raced through three and four door to door. At the line it was Hummelmeier by inches over White, Brandon Riedner, Scott Riedner, and Mark Baker. Hummelmeier, White, and Scott Riedner all scored heat wins. Brandon Reidner extended his lead over his dad Scott, but White is beginning to chip away at the lead.
The Taco Bell Grand Nationals came to life next. “Kid Dynomite” Dustin Weiss and Scott Hermersman led the field to the green flag, but it was Nick Shumacher jumping to the point right away. Aaron Streblow made his way through traffic to battle with Shumacher, bringing Steven Wirtz and Brad Juckem with. Juckem would give up the spot to a train being led by Dan Sorce that brought Kenny Richards, Tommy Moore, and others to the party. In the closing laps the field got single file and it looked like no one had anything for Shumacher. Wirtz was patiently waiting for his chance to strike and when the white flag flew he jumped outside of Shumacher. Trying to pin him down off the topside through three and four it appeared as if Wirtz had enough to get it done, but Shumacher powered off the bottom to beat Wirtz back to the line by .012 for his first win of the season. Wirtz finished 2nd, with Sorce, Richards, and Juckem taking the top 5. Richards, Hermersmann, and Juckem all scored heat wins.
Ultimateracecars.com Sport Modifieds rolled out next with Ken Childre and Keith Schmitt leading the field to the green. Schmitt jumped to the top spot right away but not for very long. Jeff “The Jet” Steenbergen took the lead away and began to run away. Schmitt fell into the clutches of Nick Schultz, Brandon Schmitt, and Brandon Riedner. Riedner sorted through the Schmitt sandwich and ran down “The Jet” before the caution flew. On the final restart Steenbergen was able to distance himself enough to secure the victory over Riedner, Schultz, Brandon Schmitt, and Keith Schmitt. Steenbergen and Brandon Schmitt took home heat wins.

The final event of the evening was the Weld Specialty Supply Modifieds, and no one was using their seats by the end of this one. Andrew “The Rocket’ Araco and “The Dragon Slayer” Dustin Smits led the field to the green flag, with Smits taking the early lead, but he had to contend with Noah Schepp. Following an early restart “Downtown” Kelly Brown used the topside to get around Schepp and quickly made his way around Smits for the lead and began checking out. With 5 to go however, lapped traffic would play a factor. Brown was picking his way through traffic with Smits closing the gap. The pair broke free of traffic with two to go setting up a final showdown between Brown and Smits. Brown again started stretching his advantage but slipped off of turn two in the final lap to allow Smits a chance to win it in the final corner. In a very similar fashion to the way he beat Schepp earlier this season, “The Dragon Slayer” used the cushion to propel him off of four and win the drag race to the line over Brown by .022 to claim his 2nd trophy of the season. Brown finished 2nd and was followed by Don Scheffler, Matt Rechek, and Schepp. Rechek, Schepp, and Scheffler all took home heat wins. Rechek and Scheffler are now tied atop the point standings. The top five are all separated by less than 20 points.
