Truscott wins Midwest Mod Special!

unnamed
It was a night that the racers at the legendary 41 year old tri-oval at Eagle River Speedway will always remember. For some the memories are special, for others it’s a night they would like to forget.

It was also a night that actually started the week before. As the previous week rain put off the feature in the Annual Auto Value WISSOTA Midwest Modified Special, and the Pure Stock Feature.

The annual Auto Value Midwest Modified Special at Eagle River Speedway was a 25 lap feature. Winning the race was a driver that has made it a routine trip Victory Lane’s all over the Midwest. That is Chippewa Falls Michael Truscott.

Truscott went into the night as the WISSOTA Midwest Modified point leader in the nation. That win will help him maintain his national point lead. While that race will be one that Truscott will have fond memories, the Midwest Mod Feature scheduled for this past Friday Night is one that he would like to forget.

In the Northern Lakes Landscaping Feature, Truscott was making the move to challenge his ‘brother n’ law,’ Jesse Aho. It was in the ‘hair-pin’ third turn that Truscott’s #22 got loose. With his car going into a slide, 3 cars right behind him braked to avoid hitting Truscott. That created a 3 car collision; it also moved Truscott to the back of the field.

Truscott did work his way through the crowd, but not enough to defeat the drier that has put his stamp on the Eagle River Speedway Midwest Mod point’s championship for the last 3 years. That is the husband of Truscott’s sister, Jesse Aho.

While it was a night that Truscott and Aho will have fond memories, it was also a night that Phelp’s Jerry Grasse would like to forget. Grasse’s car was found to not meet WISSOTA rules, thus was disqualified for the Auto Value Midwest Mod Special and the Northern Lakes Landscaping races.

It was a night that the large crowd and the Springer family of Eagle River will remember. Fans will remember one of the most exciting races of the night that in the Micro Sprint 600 Feature. It will also be a night that Ty and Tommi-Jo Springer’s parents would like to forget.

In the Micro Sprint 600 Feature, it was in the 4th lap that 12 year old Ty Springer passed the class’s defending champion, Jered Cech. ‘Fly by Ty’ passed Cech on the inside of the sweeping 2nd turn, like Cech was standing still. Then Ty hit speeds of over 90 MPH as he continued to build a lead of over a half lap on his nearest competitor, Cech. Earlier in the night, Springer not only won the Heat race, he was in Vilas County while all the other drivers were in Oneida County.

That is until Lap 12 of the 15 lap race, when Springer spun out on the hard-to-handle button-hook 3rd turn. This brought out the caution and moved Springer to the back with only 3 laps to go. Just as Track Announcer Skip Schulz was about to say, ‘put a fork in it, it’s done, Cech will get the win….”

Guess who quickly moved from the back to be right on the back of defending class champion, Jered Cech? Yep, Ty Springer. Then it was a 93 MPH dash to the finish line. Cech won the race and was thank-full that it was a 15 lap final, not a 16 lap final. .

It must have been an upside down horseshoe in the Springer trailer. In the Junior Sprint Heat, Tommi Jo Springer also had a big lead as the race was winding down. In that same spot that her older brother spun out, so did Tommi-Jo spin out. Unlike her brother, Tommi Jo’s car received damage and forced her to pull out of the Feature.

It was Lake Tomahawk’s Hunter Tingley that won the Junior Sprint Feature. Taking a second was Conover’s Dayton Rein. With the night being Northern Lakes Landscaping night to honor Northern Access Special Olympians, Dayton Rein gave the trophy he won to Nikki Deditz. Deditz is the daughter of Northern Access Agency Co-Manager’s, Lou and Mary Deditz. Nikki is a Special Olympic athlete.

The memories of the night may not be fond for the Springer’s, but it will be a night that will bring about a smile to 2 Eagle River Racers.

Eagle River’s Ryan Glembin held off Tomahawk’s Nate Langberg to win the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature. Glembin broke out of the traffic by racing so low on the inside of the hair pin turn that he came within inches of hitting the tire.

Glembin was asked if he was nervous of hitting the tire.

With the look that no one would believe him, and in the Alfred E Neuman of Mad Magazine fashion, Glembin simply chuckled and said, “No, me worry?”

It was a big night for another Eagle River racer. That being Jake Ison. In the Pure Stock Feature that was postponed from the week before, Ison held off the top racers in the class. He not only went on to win the postponed race. He spanked everyone’s behind to the point fans wondered if the other drivers could even sit for the second Pure Stock Feature. Ison was so thrilled to win that 1st Feature, while standing on top of his 001 car’s roof, he made sure those in the Upper Peninsula could hear his scream of joy.

Ison’s joy was short-lived.

Ison found out quickly that defending Eagle River Speedway Pure Stock Point Champion, CJ Hedges, Jr., defending class runner-up, Don Scharf and this summer’s Pure Stock star David Blackberg, set up to bring Ison back to earth. It was in that 2nd feature that Hedges, Blackberg and Scharf were in bumper to bumper battle with someone other than Ison. That is Ron Drake, Jr., of Phelps. .

Blackberg patiently weaved his way through traffic to get the lead. With Blackberg in the lead, everyone else got stuck in the traffic of an 11 car field. Blackberg ran away from the field for the win. The only question to ask Blackberg from Victory lane was, “David, did you know you missed a good race? That is the race way behind you?” Blackberg just chuckled.

It will be this coming Friday Night that Eagle River Speedway will have one on one Spectator racing, in addition to the regular 5 class racing action. For details you’re asked to go to the Eagle River Speedway Facebook page or www.eagleriverspeedway.com you can also call 715-479-5208. Hot laps will begin at 7:00 pm CT.
