$1000 SOUKUP MEMORIAL GOES TO “THE JACKHAMMER” JOSH LAMBERT

(Sturgeon Bay, WI) July 5, 2015 Results- Josh Lambert scored the biggest win of his young career in the IMCA Sport Mods, out dueling defending track champ Chris Budzban for the win at Thunderhill Raceway. Other feature winners were Tyler Hackett (IMCA Modified), Shawn Havel (IMCA Stock Car), CJ Weckler (IMCA Hobby Stock) and Jeremy DuBois (Street Stock).

A total of 22 IMCA Sport Mods took the green flag for the 40 lap $1000 to win main event. Draw redraw format put Chris Budzban on the front row with Kyle Raddant. Budzban quickly established himself as the car to beat, distancing himself from Bernie Reinhardt and Jarred VanLaanen. Tracy Wassenbergs machine came to halt with a right front flat on lap 5, drawing a caution. Wassenberg would continue after a trip down pit lane. On the restart Budzban set a blistering pace as Josh Lambert battled Reinhardt and VanLaanen for the runner up spot. The race stayed green all the way to the competition caution on lap 20 with Budzban as the race leader. Drivers were given a 10 minute pit stop on the front stretch. Teams made chassis adjustments, changed tires, added fuel and ate Dairy Queen ice cream.

On the restart Budzban picked up where he left off but this time Lambert kept pace and began to chip away at the lead. A caution for James Iverson set up a 9 lap dash to the checkers. Budzban stayed true to running the low line and Lambert used this to his advantage, leaping by Budzban on the outside as the race resumed. Lambert left the competition in the dust, leading the remaining laps en route to a $1000 payday. For a second year in a row Budzban had to settle for second. New comer Wyatt Block Jr. looked impressive in his first ever visit to the bullring, placing third. Last years Soukup Memorial winner Scott Boyea raced from tenth to finish fourth and VanLaanen completed the top five.

Rick Dix and Craig Dorner gave fans a thrill in the IMCA Stock Car main, racing side by side and trading the lead in the first 5 laps. Shawn Havel and Billy LeMieux joined the fray making it a four car battle. Havel executed a perfect 3-wide pass down low for the lead on Dix and Dorner on lap 9. Havel then set sail and cruised to his 3rd feature win of the season. LeMieux was second, Dorner third, Dylan Heilmann and Tony Bouche made late race runs to place in the top five.

Justin Hartel, Dean Anhalt and Dave Schmidt all took their turns leading the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Schmidt looked like he had the win in the bag until a caution with 4 laps remaining grouped the field. On the restart, CJ Weckler flexed his muscle working the tires while Schmidt ran the top groove. As the white flag flew it was anyone’s race. Weckler found a little extra bite out of turn 2 and slid up in front of Schmidt coming to the checker to score his first win of the season. Last weeks winner Ford Malvitz was third, point leader Marcus Moede rallied late to place fourth and Anhalt was fifth.

Jeremy DuBois caught race leader Billy LeMieux with just 4 laps remaining in the Street Stock headliner. DuBois in only his second run of the season worked the high side perfectly, passing LeMieux for the win. For DuBois it was his first ever Street Stock feature win. LeMieux had to settle for second, point leader James Dahlstrom was third followed by Scott Boulanger and Phil Faustini.

A wreck on the first lap of the IMCA Modified feature knocked Todd Dart and Randy Theys from competition. After that it was all Tyler Hackett once again sweeping action with his 5th feature win of the season. Greg Gretz won the battle for second over Dave Zeitler. Mark Vankauwenberg placed fourth and Tyler DeBouche was fifth.
