Langberg and Aho qualify for WISSOTA Race of Champions
on June 28, 2015 at 7:28 amIt was the AFCO WISSOTA Race of Champions qualifier Saturday Night at TNT Motor Speedway. While many would have been betting on one of the Top 20 WISSOTA Street Stock racers nationally, Jordan Kurtti, to win the Feature, the one to make travel plans to the Dakota State Fair Raceway is Tomahawk’s Nate Langberg.
Langberg had the talent and car set-up to handle the ‘dry slick’ on the inside of all of the high banked turns on the one-third mile dirt track. That tight line kept Bruce Crossing, Michigan’s, Jordan Kurtti in check throughout the Feature. In the earlier heat it was Kurtti using that same line to hold Langberg off.
If you lost your bet in the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature on going with the racer that is expected to win, you made your money back in the other WISSOTA Race of Champions Qualifier. That is in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature. The driver that has been winning at tracks all around Northern Wisconsin is the Upper Peninsula’s Jesse Aho. While Aho did win the feature, he had a stiff challenge throughout the race from the talented Rhinelander duo of Dennis Mikkelson and Dan Melton. The M & M racers were in a tough tussle amongst themselves to have the chance to find a groove to get around Aho.
In racing a Yellow flag can be the worst flag to see coming from the flagman’s stand….that is unless you are Shiocton’s Denver Larson. In the Micro Sprint 600 Feature, Rhinelander’s Jered Cech had a half lap lead in his methanol-burning Honda over Denver and the rest of the field. Then the caution came out with only 5 laps to go. When the green flag flew, Larson flew by Cech and went on to take his Suzuki-powered Micro Sprinter to the NAPA Victory Lane.
The racers in the popular TNT Motor-Speedway Pure Stock Feature had many cautions to keep Eagle River’s David Blackberg within striking distance. Unlike in the Micro Sprint 600 Feature, no one could take advantage of the re-starts. Blackberg clearly dominated in both the Feature and an earlier Heat Race.
12-year old Parker Retzlaff of Rhinelander picked up his first win in the TNT Pro Trucks. The young racer won his Heat race in his Ponnse Truck. Taking the Feature was Lac du Flambeau’s John Johnson, Sr. Johnson’s neighbor, Mario Grado was in an exciting duo with Pelican Lake’s Herb Dettman for second. Grado took 2nd.
Following In the footsteps of his mentor, sponsor, and fellow Phelps driver to the NAPA Victory Lane was Dustin Kangas. Kangas, who gets help from Phelps Jerry Grasse, held off a late challenge from Wausau’s AJ Kreager in the Junior Sprint Feature. Conover’s Dayton Rein continues to improve and took a 3rd. Racing for the first time was 5 year old Elliot Brownrigg-Johnson of Lac Du Flambeau.
Merrill’s Louis Malluege continues to dominate in the Stinger Class. Malluegge swept both the Heat and Feature Races. Saturday night’s races saw a return of Rhinelander’s Bill Martin in the Stinger Class.
Racing returns to TNT Motor Speedway for a big 4th of July race this coming Saturday Night! TNT Motor Speedway is located south of Three Lakes, off of US 45. Hot Laps to start at 6:30 pm CT.
